You can get BT in Portugal. My husband is an avid rugby fan and was every disappointed last Saturday when he coudn't watch on Sky. I rang up Sky and cancelled our sports package, went onto the BT website and arranged all on line - £15.00 a month for the sports HD package. He was watching his match 10 minutes later and the picture is brilliant

That's great - thank you - you've made two (one at least) people very happy. I've got an even better result - I've got BT Broadband and BT Sport is free. One word of caution though - I asked BT when I had difficulty logging on with my iPad if this service (use outside the UK) would continue and they advised me that SKY is talking about limiting the BT facility from January 2014. In SKY terms - they do not provide a service beyond the UK and Ireland and can't (rightfully) see the sense in helping the competition.

The new Astra sat launch went ahead last night.
It will take a few weeks to be configured , we will know by the year end what we can or cannot receive in the Algarve.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned virtual private network with respect to this topic, but if you have a sky account in the Uk, you can access your Sky service on a laptop, PC, iPad etc in Portugal (or anywhere else in the world) by downloading The Sky Go app to your device and subscribing to a VPN. I have just done it using my iPad and it's very simple to do. Reception is perfectly clear. I don't know whether I can project it on to my TV, but will experiment further.

Andara, get an Apple TV box, available on Amazon, connect to your TV and wirelessly to your router and you can then project your iPad onto your tv. Have been using this for a year now

I have an iPad but have no idea how to connect it to a VPN. Bearing in mind I am a little simple, can you explain it to me in a manner that a five years old would understand?

Go to www.my-expat-network.co uk
Select Tablet and Mobile
Select subscribe Mobile

It will now lead you to set up a monthly direct debit for £5 and give you a username and password to be used when you configure your vpn. Make a note of these.

Select Instruction guide for iPad and it will now lead you to configure your vpn on your iPad. It takes about 1 minute.
Once done, go into your general settings on your ipad and towards the bottom of the right hand panels you will see a panel entitled VPN. Select this and you will see your vpn entitled MyExpatUK. Also towards the top left hand panel you will see a new panel entitled VPN. To connect to your VPN just press the button.

They have been aaround for a long time, adverts on most of the expat sites.
On one forum there is a post from someone who bought one of these boxes, it worked for a few days and he has been waiting ages from a replacement which has to come from Spain.
Still you pays your money etc.

Just found this re the new satellite on SES's (owners of the new satellite) Facebook page:
SES: As part of SES' ongoing fleet renewal programme, we will be transferring all the UK Spot Beam transponders currently operating on ASTRA 1N across to ASTRA 2E.

This move at the 28.2/28.5ºEast orbital location will take place over several weeks beginning early February 2014.

The transfer will have no adverse implications for viewers in the UK and Ireland as the affected channels will continue to operate on the same frequencies and will be broadcast at the same, or slightly improved power levels, across the UK and Ireland.

TV viewers outside the UK and Ireland may see an impact and may not be able to receive channels from ASTRA 2E UK Spot Beam, which has a smaller footprint than ASTRA 1N. The new footprint on SES' replacement fleet has been designed to meet the requirements of UK and Irish broadcasters who target their channels for distribution in the UK and/or Ireland. UK and Irish broadcasters hold broadcasting rights only for the UK and/or Ireland but not for other countries.
