Iceland started charging for bags as people were taking handfuls from the end of the checkout to use as free bin liners!!! Pingo Doce charge for their carrier bags, as do Aldi and Lidl. I wouldn't be surprised if Continente start charging for their in the future. Why shouldn't they anyway, it encourages people to use the ever lasting ones which are only 50 cents to buy and hold a lot and last a lot longer than the cheapo plastic ones. Anyway a few cents ( probably only about 2 cents) for a bag isn't much. Marks & Spencer in the UK charge 5p for one of their bags so that you can do their advertising for them!!!

The Irish Revenue put an eco tax on plastic bags over 10 years ago, just tax by another name, they said it was to cut down on all the plastic bags dumped on the roadside. AFAIK other governments have now started to tax plastic bags, including Portugal and UK.

We dont have any problem with token charging for carrier bags.....It encourages me to remember to get the bags out of the car before entering the supermarket.
I'm embarrassed to tell you how many times I've left my wife checking stuff out of a supermarket, whilst I dash out to the carpark for the forgotten bags!! :?

Anywy....as long as we can still nick the veggy poly bags to line the "poo bins"!

Roy - I know you are a Shreddies addict same as me. What chance Iceland or any other store on the Algarve stocking them? I'm talking about the original malt flavour now, not the frosted or choco varieties (which are devil spawn!).

Yes - but at a price of around € 5.80 for a small pack. We shall bring a supply back when we drive down in September if you want to place your order

Otherwise if that is too early for you, I have always found some kind forumer who manages to find room in their case for some.

Meanwhile enjoy your noodles !!
