Problems of buying property in Portugal

I work for a tv production company, Ricochet South, the makers of No Going Back. We are making a new documentary series for C4 about the problems that can beset Brits buying property abroad. It will be a practical guide to avoiding the pitfalls, with expert advice and tips.

I would like to get in touch with British owners of property in Portugal who have recently come across various obstacles to obtaining their dream home and think that others could learn from their experiences. We want to look at a whole range of issues - from the red tape and bureaucracy involved in getting planning permissions, problems whilst dealing with professionals (or un-professionals as the case may be!) and how to avoid them, to natural disasters and bad building work.

If you’re tempted to respond, bear in mind that one of the ways in which these people boost their audiences is to make their subjects out to be complete numbskulls!

I cant speak as a 'property owner' ..but agree with Kteee.
When I watch most of these programmes Im almost always left with negative disatisfied feeling.
What I do wish is,that they would show more of the real Portugal and its people and communities.
All you seem to see mostly is ..inside 4 walls..and as guest too says..making folk look like idiots.
I wish the programme had been around in our time there..we'd have shown them a thing or too and would have been a whole lot more interesting than whats on view now!

The "german community" in cvo was shaken by an article in the renouned magazine Stern a few years back. A reporter went around town interviewing german residents asking them how their "new" lives in the town were shaping up. Most people, lead to beleive that it was some kind of human interest piece, sat down with him and told him about their life in cvo.

When the article came out, this reporter had taken most interviews out of context and meaning and turned the article into a report on the degraded loosers that the germans living abroad were. It was filled with intrigue and read more like a soap opera script than a real report.

Needless to say, most of the german community has no interest in talking to the press anymore...
