Cucumbers

Yes, I know this is a daft one, but my wife insists Where can we get English type cucumbers - instead of the awful thick skinned, non-curved, knobbly jobs - yeh I know you can peel them!!

Have to say never seen them anywhere, large / small supermarket , local markets anywhere.

Intermarche sell them occasionally but they are unbelievably expensive - peel the Pourtuguese ones and they are pretty good

Most of the supermarkets sell them, they may not have them constantly but I've found them in all the the larger supermarkets at one time or another, certainly the Continente supermarket at Guia shopping stock them more or less all the time. We prefer the Portuguese cucumbers but you do need to peel them as the skins can be rather bitter.

A normal PT cucumber is called a pepino, what is the variety we are familiar with called ?

Every nights a bad night I'm afraid cereza . I don't mind discussing the merits of cucumbers at any time of day .

We have grown our own for the last 2 years & get an excellent crop, in fact this year, after last years glut & more cucumbers than I knew what to do with, we planted half as many. At the moment we are growing, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach & broad beans for the first time.

Have you grown the English type or the PT ones?

Potuguese, we prefer them, but as I said you do need to peel them. Might try to grow some english ones next year, I'll look for some seeds when I'm back in January.
