Looking to buy a 4+ bed villa in Carvoeiro

Post by jonc »

Hi all,

(First post so I hope this is the right place.)

We are looking to buy a villa in/around Carvoeiro. I am contacting a few agents at the moment, but thought it might be worth a post here as well. Specifics are:

* detached villa with pool
* 1,000 to 10,000 sqm plot
* 4+ bedrooms
* furnished
* EUR500-600k

Preference is for an older property, possible in need of cosmetic improvement - not afraid of a bit of work! We are in the area 24th to 31st Oct to view. Potential to compete quickly

thanks,

Jonathan.

Well, I hope you had a more fruitful search than we did on our visit in October. I found the whole process really off-putting.

I must say, if I was trying to sell my property over in Portugal, I'd be worried, as the agents seem to be paranoid about releasing any useful information... such as - shock, horror! - the address. It's like going into a shoe shop in the 1960s; you have to describe what you want and then they go out to the stock room and bring you back three or four pairs you might like to consider. WAKE UP PORTUGAL! The Brits are used to self service shopping, so stop wasting our time and at least give us the basic information when we go into your office. When you are over there for a limited period, you need to organise your time which means having a short list of potential properties, preferably put together in advance via the internet. Once over there, you don't necessarily want to be chaperoned in the initial stages - you want to drive past the properties yourself as 99 times out of 100 you won't like the location, so there's no point wasting everyone's time with an internal viewing. Some might opt for the 'personal service' currently offered, but please, give us the choice.

The receptionist at one Lagos office left me fuming. "No, I can't possibly give you the address. You can drive around the area (I'd guessed correctly where it was) and see if you like it." It was like trying to find a needle in a haystack...and we gave up. If I was that villa owner, I'd be furious.

Get real, Portugal. If you want the Brits to buy, at least try and be helpful.

Yes, following advice on here, I did visit EDL and found that experience somewhat overbearing I'm afraid. Nothing puts me off more than the hard sell; I just wanted to be able to take the basic info away from his office and mull it over with my husband, drive past any properties that took our fancy - not to be pressured to go and see his idea of what we might want. I asked why they wouldn't give out any addresses and all I got was another mini-lecture on 'we don't sell houses that way' . Well, some of us don't buy houses his way either; there are so many agents we didn't have the luxury of 'spending hours' with each of them. It just seems so inefficient.

i think you must realie that portugal is diferent to the uk & so will be most countries throughout the world as they all have different ways of selling,buying&presenting items for sale.when we went round with the people from EDL they asked us what we were looking at property wise&what our budget was.they then took us to all properties which were in the range we explained to them&gave their advise we then went round after on our own to have a further look at different times of the day etc to get a feel of the place which is what you must do anyway&if possible different times of the year to get a true picture of what you are buying.it took us approx 12 months&several estate agents as well as 2 or 3 visits to EDL to find the right place.sometimes advise can be mistaken as pushiness.if you are expecting things to happen as they do in the uk you are in for a shock!!
