Hi everyone, can I ask you all yet another question?
We are relocating to the algarve in 10 days time. Our car insurance expires at the end of April and I wondered if anyone could recommend a Portuguese or UK company who could insure our car at a competative price?
We will be permanent residents in Portugal and will not have a UK address.

Someone will correct me if i am wrong but! If you are Portuguese resident you should have a Portuguese driving licence and are not allowed to drive a UK registered vehicle in Portugal on that licence. I presume the vehicle you are talking about is a UK reg vehicle.

There have been many paragraphs relating to car importation on this blog in recent times - all of which would point you in the right direction.
In brief if you are permanently moving to Portugal and planning to bring your UK registered car with you with a view to importing it - you have an arduous task ahead of you. You can get away with having the car in Portugal 'legally' for 183 days before starting the import process - but the advice from those who have gone before is to start it straight away (some advise against it altogether) - as it takes an age and a lot of money to complete.If you trawl back through the issues raised since the beginning of the year you will find at least one comprehensive posting that practically covered everything to do with bringing/importing a car into Portugal.
I had intended buying a new car in the UK (as it is half the price it would be in Portugal) but have postponed my decision for the time being - based on the experiences of a great many others. Apparently there is no 'guarantee' that a brand new European manufactured car will pass the Portuguese matriculation 'tests' without you spending a considerable amount of your money and your time.
Do your homework before embarking on the 'journey' - it will be time well spent

You do not have to take out a Portuguese driving licence if you take up permanent residence here. You can keep your UK licence but it must be registered with what used to be the DVG. I am not sure what this body is now called. AFPOP can provide the forms for this. You get a document to prove that the licence has been registered and you have to show this to the police if stopped. In this way you can drive both Portuguese and UK registered cars.
Unless it has been so registered a UK driving licence cannot be used to drive a Portuguese registered vehicle unless it is covered by a formal agreement from a car hire company. If you live here and own a Portuguese registered car, family or friends visiting from the UK cannot legally drive it even though they may be covered by the terms of the vehicle's insurance.

One other to consider regarding your permanent motoring in Portugal:
You will not be able to insure your British registered car with a Portuguese insurance company. There are some UK companies who will provide cover (Co-op and Saga) but others limit the cover to 90 days in a year.
You would never think we are all in this EU club and have to go through all this bureaucratic nonsense. Probably done to justify the existence of all the excessive number of Civil Servants

There is a full page article in the Sunday Times supplement today offering insurance cover for ex pats in Spain and Portugal. It states that the Sunday Times has teamed up with a leading Expatriate insurance provider to offer readers in Spain and Portugal competitive rates and first class cover through Lloyds of London for vehicles, boats, travel insurance and holiday homes.

This would not exclude you from the rules regarding UK plated cars in Portugal and the maximium time a car can stay ( 183 days ) without being removed ( back to UK ) or matriculated.

The moral of this post seems to be ' Get a bike'
