A Rede
In the 27 years we have been coming to Carvoeiro the experience we had outside Restaurant A Rede on Monday night (17th November) - this week has astounded me.
We parked our car outside the A Rede restaurant shortly after 8.00pm to dine in Primavera to celebrate my Wife's birthday with 2 friends. We had a really enjoyable evening and left at 11.15pm.
When we got to our car the Portuguese owner (at least he said he was) of A Rede came out of his premises and started to rant and rave about us damaging his BMW 5 Series that was parked beside us. When we parked there earlier there was no other car either side of us - but rather than listen he used a litany of Anglo Saxon profanities interspersed with suggestions that our minds were affected by the amounts of Viagra we had consumed. This tirade of abuse and a physical attack on our car went on for 10 minutes.
At the outset of this 'attack' he was standing with two colleagues - who eventually decided that he had over-stepped the mark and disappeared back into the restaurant. The restaurant was empty at this time.
The damage to the offside rear passenger door was a paint scuff - caused, I suspect by somebody catching his door with theirs. Fortunately for us, our car a Renault Clio, was lower than his and could not have made contact with the damaged part of his car. He was having none of it.
We considered calling the GNR but decided against it as they usually side with the locals.
Should anybody think we were worse the wear for drink and exacerbated the situation - our driver was not drinking and the rest of us shared a bottle of wine because we were on early flights on Tuesday morning. The reality is we were so shocked by the 'attack' and the guy's unwillingness to even participate in any dialogue - I asked him several times if he really felt such an onslaught was necessary. His Anglo Saxon expletives left me in no doubt that I have begun to see the background to some of the posts on here regarding the behaviour of some on our hallowed ground. Clearly the imported bad behaviour is beginning to get through to at least one of the local business fraternity.
I have never used A Rede in all the time we have been in Carvoeiro - and now never will. I would say to anybody who has the urge to use the place - beware and do not park beside a black BMW 5 Series if you go there - better still give the place a wide berth.
Here in the UK this sort of behaviour would not surprise me - but in our beloved Carvoeiro -it flabbergasted me. There is a suspicious part of me that says - he was looking for a 'victim' to pin the damage on, in the hope they would 'bung' him a few Euro rather than call the GNR. I don't think I am too far wide of the mark.
If his food is as bad as his attitude - avoid it like the plague.

Far from trying to stand up for this person, I will say that I live in one of the apartments above this parade of restaurants and bars. Our cars are continuously being swiped by people who park carelessly.
The person who runs A Rede is unfailingly polite and pleasant to all passers by in all the years I have been in Cvo. A little odd at times, and possibly a different sense of humour to many, but he is never rude.
This does not in any way make up for the fact that he should nto have attacked you in this way, however, I have NEVER heard him raise a voice before, and was extremely surprised at your feeling that he had done this before and was trying to extort money from you under false pretences.
however, if this stops people parking in this spot and damaging my own car, then long may it last!

So that we are talking about the same person - he is about 35-40 with medium length black hair and about 5'10"?
I can't see anywhere in my post where I said I felt or that he had attempted to extort money from me or anybody else - under false pretences.
There is a common practice around Europe at present where road traffic 'accidents' are staged to part unsuspecting motorists with their money to avoid any involvement with the Police authorities - I don't imagine Portugal is immune from this.
That is not to suggest that the owner of A Rede participates in any such activity. Moreover, the damage to his door was 'old'. His gripe may have been genuine but proof needs to be present and in this case he got it badly wrong.
I sympathise with your predicament and would respectfully suggest that given the amount of incidents there appears to be - you park across the road where nobody would park beside you. I would ask you explain that with the number of restaurant/bars in that parade - are the spaces there for customers or the residents?

The guy said he was the owner - but could well have been a waiter - he was dressed like one.
I wouldn't have put him at 40-50 though! If he was driving a BMW 5 Series and was making it very clear that I understood how expensive it was - would a waiter have that sort of money?

It sounds like the owner Carlos, I have to say when we have eaten there & we have often he has always been very charming if somewhat eccentric, his 'jokes' can be a little repetitive but the service has always been very attentive. He has never been rude or abusive in our presence & I'm really saddened to hear of this incident.

Maybe that's because you've never eaten there! This would definately be the owner - I always call him Antonio(Bandaras). He is quite amusing but a bit annoying and does always talk about "Viagra" soup etc. Think he might be on drugs? His bahaviour sounds irrational. Business is bad maybe and he lashes out at someone he sees leaving Primavera. We have always had very good food at A Rede but will be careful where we park. I'm sorry about your incident.
We went to A rede twice this year, once on each of our visits. We had never been there before. The food was absolutely superb on both occasions. Exceptional infact.
That being said - the waiting staff were very friendly - at times a little ott.
But the service or meal experience people have had there is surely irrelevant to this.
The guy who acted in this enraged manner is out of order,and if i was the original poster would never take my custom their either.Hope it didn't ruin your holiday

We have been coming to Carvoeiro for 27 years and in all that time have never been inside the place and now never will.
It did put a dampener on what had been a really enjoyable evening in Primavera. As there was not too much trade around for Senor Rede (or whatever his name is), he certainly did not cover himself in glory as far as our extended party was concerned - 12 in total - business/custom he will never get the benefit of - and seeing a lot of people emerging from Primavera - would not have pleased him - especially when some of us had parked outside his establishment.
There are plenty of good eating places in Cvo for us not to be concerned at missing out on the 'delights' of his 'Viagra' taunts and any other obscenities he chooses to amuse (abuse) his customers with.
Anyway - life's too short to allow this to hinder our love of Carvoeiro and when we move there permanently next year - all this will be a distant 'unpleasant' memory.
Thanks to all who offered their opinions on this obnoxious person - maybe one of you should have a word in his 'shell-like' and put him straight on the nuances of good public relations in respect of winning business and business prevention.
