New Airport at Alvor

Post by Rossi's idol »

Hiya;
anyone have any up to date information on the upgrade at Alvor airport? Is it likely to compete with Faro for people travelling to the Western Algarve. Any info. would be appreciated.

If you are talking about Aerodromo de Portimao at Alvor, the improvements to the best of my knowledge are :-

Resurfacing (not lengthening) the runway.
Building a new control tower.
Building a new hanger.

Hi Mark
Yes it is that one, however it is Alvor, not Lagos. I believe it is a joint project between the two camaras, Lagos and Portimao.
I am looking forward to hearing more about it as our apartment is in Portimao so it would be easier for us.

To get airliners into Portimao (Alvor) Aerodromo the runway would have to be extended almost to Meia Praia and because of Monte Alvor landings could only be East bound (with no go around facility i.e. get it wrong and you crash !!) and take-offs only West bound.

Conclusion -it is categoricaly a no-go.

At best it could be lengthened to take executive jets of the Citation/Falcon 8 - 10 seaters size.

Having explained this twice before on the forum, I hope this puts this theory firmly to bed.
