Are you road legal?
Traffic officials have in recent weeks been seen clamping down on foreign residents who live and work in Portugal, but who have not completed the necessary paperwork making their licences (if obtained in an European Union member state) valid in Portugal.
The DGV which is Portugal’s equivalent to the DVLA has very similar rules to its British counterpart, and it is no different when it comes to driving licences.
As is the case in Britain, it is a legal requirement in Portugal for the address on the licence to reflect the correct address of its holder. A Portuguese driver also faces a fine should his identity document and driver’s licence reflect two different places of residence.
If a driving licence shows a UK address, but its holder has residence in Portugal and lives here, a visit to the nearest DGV centre will be in order where a form to confirm an address in Portugal must be requested.
If a UK driving licence is ever lost, stolen or damaged, it can only be renewed or replaced by the original issuing authority.
The DVLA does not send licences to overseas addresses. In addition, when a driving licence finally expires, the DGV will not renew it unless the holder takes (and passes) a driving test in Portugal.
Long term EU residents in Portugal are therefore advised by local authorities to exchange their driving licences for a Portuguese one, though they will be required to surrender their original licence in the process, which can be recovered should they decide to return to their home countries in the future.

Be prepared for a long visit if you go to the DGV in Faro. You may not need camping gear and survival rations but it sure isn't quick!
