Car hire or transfer

Post by cvo-newbie »

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to Carvoeiro and the Algarve.
I've got a villa in June for 2 weeks.

I was wondering whether it would be worth hiring a car for the duration of the stay (pretty expensive) or whether it would be better to just get a transfer from Faro to the villa and make do.

The main point about having the car for us would be to get to and from supermarkets/shops and possibly the odd trip. The majority of our time is likely going to be spent by the pool :) and I'm not sure whether the expense of a car is worth it.

The only other consideration is that I have a one year old daughter so I'd need to pre-book a transfer with a car seat - can anyone recommend a transfer company?

Thanks!

Welcome. My personal reccomendation would always be to go for the hire car. By the time you have paid for transfers each way, perhaps rented a car for 3 or 4 days to do some (mandatory) exploring of the coastline, and wonderful beaches, water parks etc plus the occasional taxis, you may find the price difference isn't that big.

However, I guess the more important question is the location of your villa. How close is it to the town, beach, restaurants and mini-markets ? Also remember that Carvoeiro is a hilly town, and the journey from town (beach, bars, restaurants) to your Villa is almost certainly a steep uphill battle - perhaps with pushchair ?

If, you really think that you're going to stay by the pool the majority of the time, and occasional visit to supermarket (by taxi perhaps), then why not consider the airport transfer service recommended by many of my guests and sponsored by the webmaster here.

Either way, have a great holiday.

Car hire if you can afford it.

The Algarve has lots to offer and the best (only) way to see it is via car. You can drive to the 'end of the world', at Capo St Vincent or drive to the 'top of the world' at Monchique (Foia).

With a car, the Algarve is your lobster - as Arthur Daley says! :)

I am being swayed to rent a car and algarvedriver seems to be a recommended choice.

Thanks all for your advice!

 Hi, I agree with everyone else, the car hire connected to this site, ad on the home page, has always been the cheapest and most reliable, we have been using them for over three years now and haven't had a problem so far. A car will give you so much more of a choice and enable you to go to places like Silves (fantastic) Lagos (lovely marina and estuary walk) Monchique and Caldas de Monchique (spa waters and very pretty) and then further on to the highest point, Foia, to view the whole of the Algarve on a good clear day. Don't forget the water parks and the Algarve shopping centre.

Have a fun time
