REALATIVELY SAFE
I read recently that safety in Portugal is the second most secure country in the EU.

When living in Carcavelos last year, we had our garage broken into. Had some beer, wine and CDs stolen. Some neighbours showed an interest and offered sympathy (it was no big deal really), but when we mentioned reporting it to the police, the response was (something like) “waste of time”, “not a good idea, could be asking for further trouble”. We reported it anyway, and got the impression that the local copshop is not geared up for dealing with such complaints. They certainly weren’t interested in seeing the damage.
This does nothing for my faith in the accuracy of the crime figures

I think you make an interesting comment Bruxinha afterall it is strongly believed that crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence.
One to consider that may highlight the above is that in Colombia the official figure is only 4.98 per 1000 - hmmm I wonder
