just noticed that policeman was shot dead yesterday in lagos

this from the algarve observer , and a robbery happended in silves! first

A Lagos PSP officer was killed at about six in the morning yesterday by a shot in the head; this was confirmed by the Centro das Operações de Socorro (Centre for Rescue Operations). The officer was shot following an attempted robbery on a Multibanco ATM in Portimão by the same gang that has already been operating in Faro and Silves.

The attempted robbery from the Multibanco cash machine occurred in the Budens Ecomarché hypermarket in Portimão but it was prevented by the GNR who went to the scene, according to a statement by the regional delegate of the Union of Police Professionals, António Cartaxo, to the Lusa agency.

There were shots when the GNR arrived and the group of robbers managed to escape in the direction of Lagos where the PSP had, in the meantime, set up a road-block where there was another exchange of shots between the robbers and the police, during which a police chief from the Lagos PSP was fatally shot.

The individuals then used the hard shoulder of the EN125 to get round the police road-block, while shooting at close range, and thus managing to escape.

It is presumed that the gang is the same one that tried to remove a Multibanco ATM from a petrol station in Faro, which involved a shootout with the GNR, PSP and Judicial Police but from which they managed to escape unhurt.

According to António Cartaxo, the same group is thought to have robbed a Multibanco ATM at a filling station in Silves on 24th November.

The same source underlined that in the three incidents the individuals used the same “modus operandi”, i.e. the use of high-powered stolen cars and the use of violence.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Faro PSP Command described the events that occurred between 5 and 6 am yesterday, and disclosed that the gang consisted of six or seven men in two, high-powered vehicles.
The PSP chief who died was 49 years old, originally from Caldas da Rainha and had been working in the Lagos station for about ten years. He leaves a wife and two children, aged 12 and 20.

What sort of sentance can the killer expect if convicted? In the UK that sort of behaviour would warrant at least a Chinese burn.

Cember the absolute minimum is 40 hours unpaid work - just thought I would mention that just in case anyone believes that it is possible to be sentenced to only 5 for any offence.

Why HP what do you think they do when they are on an "unpaid work" order ? Ours build cycle paths, clear up nature reserves, paint community centres, some work in charity shops, maintain churchyards, make furniture and some with specialised skills would be used on community based projects to their best advantage.

Again for info "Community Service" hasn't existed for a few years, it became !"Community Punishment" and under the 2003 CJA which was implemented in April this year is became "Unpaid Work"

Sorry Guest yes this about an armed robbery on Lagos and it has got rather hijacked. Couldn't help myself - just can't seem to let inaccuracies go

I do think think an armed robbery on the Algarve though is relevant to the CVO forum and hope that others will have something more useful to input.

yes you are right maddi (as always)., from what I hear or understand (please correct me if Im wrong) that many times blanket pardons are given here every so often...so reducing the prison numbers

Why Maddi,its hard to explain really ,unless you have had to work hard all your life to acheive anything.Then what these people do cannot be called work .Imho.

Thought there might have been some sympathy shown for the officer who last his life and those he leaves behind him.
He was doing his duty protecting those whlive in the Algarve including ex pats and vistors.

What do we see " the usual comments from the usual supsects ".

Hope nothing happens to them when they are on holiday.

With respect TBBR some of us reside here in the Algarve (Portugal) and care very much for "every" human being.

Maddi also with respect.... in so far as your comment that Community Service in the UK goes unpaid to the criminals......no this is not correct.... the criminals receive full board and lodgings, clothes, entertainment and the like.... and those that look after them.... inclusive of yourself.... salaries and expenses are paid from Public Monies...and if these individuals did not exsist,...then of course the likes of you Maddi would be out of a job..... I am sorry but these are facts are they not
