Vodafone Walkie Talkie: Pioneering service in Portugal
Lisbon, 23 June 2005 - As from today, Vodafone is offering all its customers a new and original service, a pioneering initiative in Portugal and one of the first in Europe, which adds a walkie-talkie function to mobile phones.
Called Vodafone Walkie Talkie, the service allows a mobile phone to be used also as a walkie-talkie by just pressing a special button. The customer can then communicate exactly as with a walkie-talkie, but with additional advantages.
Unlike normal walkie-talkies, which require users to be very close to each other, with Vodafone Walkie Talkie, they can communicate even if they are at opposite ends of the country.
In addition, customers of this service can opt to speak to a group of users or with only one of their contacts, giving a level of privacy that is not possible with normal walkie-talkies. At any time, they can select the most suitable mode of call, either using the Walkie Talkie function or making a normal voice call like with any mobile phone.
Vodafone Walkie Talkie has the original feature of being a service aimed both at the younger generation and business customers, responding to the former's liking for chatting in groups and the latter's need to communicate with colleagues while on the move.
The service is based on PoC technology (Push-to-talk over Cellular or PTT), which Vodafone has been testing and evaluating over the past year. A decisive contribution to its development has been made by hundreds of users, both business and Yorn customers (in the Yorn Walkie Talkie competition last August), whose participation in the tests has helped Vodafone to define the characteristics of the new service and the most suitable price plan.
During this launch phase, Vodafone Walkie Talkie is available with the Nokia 5140, the retail price of which is 139.90 euros. The service will be available shortly on a wider range of other handsets.
Use of the service is free until 1 October 2005. After that date, Vodafone plans to introduce a price structure under which the user can opt to pay a fixed amount to use the service during a specified period of time (e.g. a day, a week or a month) with unlimited use.
The Vodafone Walkie Talkie service will be marketed throughout Vodafone's retail network and will be promoted with a major advertising campaign.
