travellers cheques

I'm coming out at the end of june ( to Carvoeiro I mean!!)and although it's my 5th year there I would like to know if it is better to bring sterling or euro t/cheques as last year I used the hole in the wall but use the cheques as a standby.I should of gone into a bureau de change and asked about commission but forgot.
Also I'd like to wish "Bobby" a happy birthday.... I'm two days older than him so I share the comiserations.
