Algarve for real
Im in slight dilemma...re: Pic for book cover!
Have spent most of afternoon sorting through photos..Im seeking a really good authentic pic that depicts life in the Algarve countryside as it was when we were resident in early 90s.
Im in dialogue with editor over this..I can't use postcards(great pity as I've some lovely pics I've collected..for example 'Lady knitting at cottage door'....'knife sharpeners' in Portimao & others) but can't be used because of copyright
I've been advised not to use 'coastline' views as these are really overdone on books already!
I have a few photos...folk in donkey& cart...Silves castle..the Silver metallic monument of Crusaders at Silves..but Im really not sure
Suppose what Im asking is..would any of you have a photo ? I've been prompted to post this after reading Thunderbolt's post about the 'Folk dancing' up at Monte.CVO!
and her mentioning pics!
Im going to send Pub. mine but I wonder if any of you good folk out there
might have that special 'something'(thats if you wouldn't mind my using it?)..and of course it would be acknowledged on the book..
I hope Steen won't mind my posting this here.....wasn't sure exactly where to post..
Thank-you in advance..elliex

As far as the postcards are concerned, if you feel they are what you need can't you ask about copyright to the printer / publisher concerned. If they are that old then the firm / people may not even be about, and like some music, after so many years (50 I think) they go out of copyright.
Just a thought.
Good luck with your search

PS one other thing - most postcards are "landscape" so make sure if your book is "portrait" and if you use for example a postcard, do ensure your main subject area fits within the dimensions of your book cover.

There is a company called 'getty images', you should be able to find it on the web, that have photo's of absolutely everything for hire. They are usually quite expensive, but worth checking out, they may do a deal for a 'one off'. Alternatively if you can wait till Tuesday, I will check at the office for cheaper (or free) companies that we use for shots.

That website you went to has a British flag along the top which means the page is translated, so hit that. It seems to be a travel site though.
This website is a bit closer to what you want, but it all appears to be of maps, but there may be a contact email or address somewhere on there - sorry I didn't have time to look right now...... but I'll keep looking.

Graham..I do appreciate your help with this..thank-you!
I was so tired last night..what with sifting through old pics and contacting firends..then the election!! Very late getting to bed
Anyway Graham..This morning I found the English version of the Olimar company and after a search I found their contact e-mail.
It is a travel comany but I've asked if they're the ones producing the postcards..and I've attached one that I would like to use.
Don't know if it's going to work..but worth a try?
Thanks again.....oh BTW I looked through the above website Graham but it is only maps..
Cheers to you...ellie

isn't it a bit wierd that a publisher is getting you to do this? They must have access to all the picture libraries surely - they should have accounts with them - if you do it yourself you'll have to pay? I'd have thought their marketing department would be doing it...
sorry not much help - how about a nice watercolour or illustration on the front rather than a photo?

Not odd at all darling....he asked me if I had any special photo of my time there that I wanted to use..
I have a few..as i explained on my post...and sent them but they're not right for it (quality and image)..
I was advised by Portguese friend(whos bookseller) that the 'coastal' scenery ones are over used.. I sent editor a sample one(postcard) of old ladies outside cottages and he agreed that would be perfect....
but theres copyright to worry about & quality of pic..
I've just received email from him and hes in touch with snapper in Portugal who might come up with one....
it has to fit my 'Shorts'!
P.S Thanks to all who've helped me..including yours darling
