Im not too worried as its Gaynor they seem to bite !!

Our experience has been varied. Funnily enough in April/May and Sept/Oct they seem to have been worse. My wife gets terrible bites, but since we have nets fixed on the inside of the villa shutters things have been much better. The plug in things do work, I suggest you turn them on before you go out in the evening and keep the bedroom doors shut all night (apart from yourselves getting back into the bedrooms !)
Jeremy is right about the mosquitos, the hot dry summer months usually mean mosquitos are no problem, but when it is still warm and we get a bit of rain then they appear.
Scientific fact the eggs are laid in water and take 10 days to hatch so after rain in a hot spell beware of mozzies.
Always make sure lights are off when doors and windows are open at night, and if you eat outside dusk is the worst time to get bitten, so put repellent on around your ankles.
As my daughter says the flies are more of a problem when eating outside.

Now this is not a 'plug' !! and I have no shares in the company but....
during my whole months stay at Monte Dourado Aparts last Sept/Oct..I did not suffer one mossie bite!In fact I never saw one in aprt.at all!
.........
But you are right about the little biters been prolific during that period...
the previous year..in another aprt..Hub was bitten alive..but he is susceptible to them..
They didnt affect me that much....but I kept a saucer of 'ripe' cheese near my bed...
apparently they are attracted to this...like smelly feet!
Gawd..Im back to the wellies again

From my Turkey forum: Posted by caz-and-dave
I swear by Avon skin so soft dry oil spray - the woodland fresh variety. Dave used to come home with about 30/40 bites every year despite trying every mossie spray going, vitamin B and even some revolting spray he bought from a fishing tackle shop which even drove our friends out of the room next door when he sprayed it on!!!
Since using the Avon he gets hardly any. In fact one year he forgot to put it on at night - due to too much raki in the bar at teatime! - and had about 9 when he got up next morning.
MC: I too use it and it does work . . . plus you smell nice and your skin is moisturised as well

No ones mentioned the Marmite theory again (yet) Tried it last year, A dolup a day for about 3 days before you go and top up whilst your there. Not one bite for the first week but forgot the top-up factor for the second
Take your own though because it's expensive in Portugal.
For anyone that hasn't seen the thread last year, it works as a deterent, the body retains it and gives off a smell for a couple of days that humans can't sniff but the pests can and steer clear. Mike, Chislehurst.

I have always suffered very badly from mosquito bites = allergic reaction - very painfull - swelling - itching - etc etc ....... and then being left with bad scars - even though I haven't scratched them!!
My husband on the other hand never gets a single bite!! (They don't like bad meat!!!)
Following last years discussion on this subject I ordered the Avon woodland spray. We had 2 weeks in the village in July - not one bite!!
I still followed my usual routine - closing all doors and windows by late afternoon and using the plug -ins in the bedrooms and then spraying myself before we went out in the evenings - it seemed to work!
The only comment against it - in my opinion - it's not the nicests of scents! Probably slightly better than cheese or marmite (bit old lady-ish) but worth putting up with, as anything is better than the bites!!
I already have my supplies ready for this July!!

Seems like Avon wins the day but.....
Do the guys a or even the girls here want to (according to Mansie) 'smell like old ladies!!'
only joking
As Mansie says anythings better than the 'BITES'!!
BTW..I kept the slightly ripe cheese at the end of the bed nearer the feet area
How much is a 'dollop' of Marmite, Mike?
I like it..but only spread very thinly on toast...
Do you have to eat a lot every day for it to work?......ellie

If you want a great insect repellant thats safe and natural. For adults and children try , 5 drops of lavender , 5 drops of eucalyptus oils , mix with a mug of vodka. put in a spray bottle and use as a room spray , can also be used on the skin ( can stain clothes , but then so do a lot of cream repellants ) , not to be used during the day as can cause photosensitivity ( basically more prone to burn ). I use on myself , husband and eightyear old son and none of us get bitten. can also be used on animals ( but dogs will usually find a pile of dirt and try and rub it off to disguise the smell. Also if you carry a bottle of pure lavender oil , put immediately onto any bites or stings neat , it will stop pain and reduce swelling and itching. I got stung by the bug from hell last year , severe pain and a bump that looked like it should be on a tom and jerry cartoon , glowing in the dark. within a few secounds of applying the oil thge swelling went down and the pain had gone. Always try a small patch test with any essential oils , as like anything you could have a sensitiviy or allergy. If any reaction wash immediately. good luck enjoy your holiday.
