We are due to arrive on 1st May and we are wondering if this is a public holiday and will the shops, especially the Intermarche will be open

may day labour day everthing will be closed

On May Day not everything will be closed. Have already checked and the supermarket in Rocha Brava as well as the "Alisuper " supermarket in Rua do Barranco will be opened. On Monday I'll have the confirmation from Intermarche about their opening this day.

Just to let you know that having failed through the forum to find the answer I found the phone number for the Intermarche through Google and it will be open on 1st May until 1 pm. Maybe somebody will be able to answer this supplementary question. Will the local booze shops be open, at least for a limited time, on 1st May ?
