Wireless in CVO

We are looking forward to being in CVO again soon. We have become quite dependent on computers and the internet for keeping in touch with friends and family by e-mail, producing newsletters for various community groups, not to mention keeping up with Coro etc. So, we are wondering if we want to do the internet cafe thing again this year or maybe jump into the world of wireless by acquiring a notebook with the capability and carrying it across the Atlantic with us. Do any forum readers have experience with wireless in CVO? If so, where is it available, what are the fees (any of it free), and how is it working?

It's quite expensive to use a laptop over here on dial-up, it only becomes cheaper if you sign up for broadband which isn't feasible if you're not here permanently.

I would stick with the internet cafe if I were you.

Depending on when u r coming out, I may have found some wireless hotspots you can log on to - still working on it though.

We are planning to arrive mid-February. So lots of time.

Have been looking at various notebook packages on sale for Christmas. Since SWMBO is getting to be as PC dependent as I these days, we have been talking about getting a second PC anyway. The notebook with wireless capability would seem to be a great way to go as there are one or two available for under C $1,000 if I understand the ads correctly.

Although I haven't really tried them, there seem to be lots of "hotspots" in the States and the big cities of Canada and I gather they are "rolling out" pretty fast everywhere. Hopefully, CVO is on the list. But, for that matter, it would be neat to be having a cafe on the waterfront in say Lagos while catching up on e-mail, wouldn't it?

Of course, the other problem is recharging the battery. My daughter fried her printer and other things while studying in France a few years ago despite having what she thought were adequate adaptors. Are the mains in Portugal more or less similar to the UK? Or maybe there's a way to find compatible charger that runs on Portugal electrics?

All thoughts welcome.

(Ktee: You may be right. Maybe the cafe's all I really need but wireless is the coming thing and I have various deadlines for groups that I work with so thought I'd ask. Besides, it would be kind of cool to get a wireless for Christmas instead of the usual pj's, socks, & scotch, n'est pas?)

Hi Showwwie & e-richard,

I am quite sure the Sesmarias water tower has a wireless antenna sitting on top of it, but I have not figured out who runs it yet.

Other wireless projects in Cvo seem to have died (there was a shop in Cerro dos Pius, but there was never anybody in it).
Will keep hunting.
