If you want to see how some people react to these scams, have a look at http://www.419eater.com/. The site is about "baiting" 419 scammers. The site explains the use of 419:
"Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud Overview
The perpetrators of Advance Fee Fraud (AFF), known internationally as "4-1-9" fraud after the section of the Nigerian penal code which addresses fraud schemes, are often very creative and innovative."
Some of the exchanges between would-be fraudster and "victim" are hilarious. The down side of this is that thousands of people each year are cheated out of large sums of money.

419eater is brilliant. take a look at http://www.universityofnigeria.com/
They are now using regular snail mail too.
I just got a letter today, informing me that I have won 254,000 euros on El Gordon (Spanish Lottery). Said my name was one of 18 people sharing 2.4 Million. My name was entered by random,as part of a general international ticket allocation. I just had to send form back to La Primitiva, which was the letterhead and it was all being handled by La Estrella de Seguros. Trouble is they asjked for my bank details and a photocopy of my ID card or passport. It looked very genuine even a hand written signature and an offical looking stamp on the letter.
So I've got the new Porsche ordered now, but I don't think the money will turn up. Especially as I didn't send the form back.
Hmmmmmmm
maybe I should do the lottery anyway
