EasyJet cabin Baggage size change

I have just had an email from EJ stating that as from 2/7/2013 the size of cabin bags that will be accepted on board unconditionally has been reduced. Bags within the old limit " may " be placed in the hold.
We have noticed that finding space in the cabin for all the bags carried by passengers if becoming a problem and causing delays when boarding.
I assume that they will be installing smaller frames to check to see if your bag conforms or not .

On today's busy flights, overhead locker space on board our aircraft is limited, which means we're not always able to fit everyone's cabin bag on board and some bigger bags have to be put in the hold. So to make things fair for all our customers, we're introducing a CABIN BAG GUARANTEE on all flights from the 2 July 2013 onwards.








You can bring ONE piece of cabin baggage and if it is no bigger than 50 x 40 x 20cm including handles and wheels, we guarantee it will always travel with you in the cabin, either in the overhead locker, or if necessary, under the seat in front of you.





You can continue to bring ONE slightly bigger cabin bag, free of charge, up to the current maximum size of 56 x 45 x 25cm including handles and wheels, but on some busy flights this may have to go into the hold.

Remember to check your cabin bag dimensions before you fly.

I think that is fair enough. At present they look for voluneers to put their bags in the old, if this new scheme works, and hopefully it will, it should mean there is enough room on board for all bags.

I have just read an interesting comment, the NEW case dimensions that assure you of being able to have it with you in the cabin =40 ltres of capacity.
The old case size could hold up to 63 litres . 30% more.

At least EJ are charging for using a bigger case unlike Ryan Air.

We had always resisted EJ's request for volunteers to put hand luggage in the hold, till I was selected to do so, as there weren't enough volunteers! What we thought would be a problem, was the exact opposite! No case to trundle around the airport, nothing to lug up the stairs and into the overhead lockers....it's a lot easier!

Unless you have lap tops , etc all you need to work when you travel. There is no way that is going into the hold.

Will be buying jackets with very big pockets.

Surely this is only an issue if you are only travelling with hand luggage and putting nothing in the hold. If you ARE putting a case in the hold there is no need for a "fully sized" cabin bag. All you need to carry is mainly paperwork so why have a case. I travel with combat like trousers with plenty of pockets.
However, I do understand a lot of owners abroad will be travelling with just the cabin baggage. Surely those who have just purchased a cabin bag measuring 56 x 45 x 25 and travel regularly on Easy Jet will not be impressed !!

Too True we will be replacing at least one bag.
We use the holds 1 or twice year no more than that.

That is me.
I just bought a very expensive full size carry on bag 3 weeks ago specifically to accommodate my extra large laptop, camera and lenses, iPad and Kindle, and have told EJ very publicly on Twitter what I think of their sudden announcement. Their response:
"Just take the equipment out of the bag if you are asked to put it in the hold."

According to Which? there are actually only 2 suitcases on sale in the whole of the UK that would conform to these new sizes !
There are probably over 100 that were specifically built to the larger size.

A few flights ago the Jobsworth at Bristol instructed the first 20 people in the queue that they MUST put their bags in the hold.
We asked him why he was not conforminmg to EJ policy and asking for volunteers the response was " too busy ".
We and others aksed him if he could provide plastic bags for our valuable items ( laptops etc ) to take on board with us.
"No " that was our problem.
Between us those involved managed to find a way of taing said articles on board.
This of course caused delays and a long queue at the gate, much to the annoyance of the staff and some other travellers.
We complained to EJ and received a letter of apology as they do have a specific policy of asking for volunteers which works.

If EJ continued with this as Ryan air do and enforce the size limits and number of bags carried on board I cannot see any reason for this new policy.

It is probably a soft way of getting us to pay for more hold baggage and eventually cabin baggage.

Previously too many people abused the amount and size of carry on bags etc.
It still amazes me when I see the amount of stuff people try and take on board.
I travelled to Geneva with Easy Jet last week and the arrogance of some travellers was unbelievable, they seem to think that the rules do not apply to them.

The trouble is that these new rules will not chnage that, we have seen travellers smuggling extra bags even tennis rackets under their coats etc.
The gate staff have got to be more vigilant.

Ryanair, Easyjet and a host of other low-cost carriers continue to increase passenger numbers while carrying out more restrictions proves that they don't take a blind bit of notice of any complaints they receive.

So long as there is a demand for cheap flights people will flock to them. It is only when numbers fall will they take serious note.

Saying that, today is still much better than the pre budget airlines era where the established carriers could charge a fortune and you had little option but to accept!
