Will's Words
In London..I visited 'The Globe' theatre that stands on Thames bankside opposite St Paul's.Its a wonderful reconstruction of Shakespeares original and as I browsed in the gift shop I found a copy of some of his 'quotes'
How much we owe to Will for our English language..and I 'brushed up my Shakespeare'!
"It's all Greek to me"
"more sinned against than sinning"
"vanished into thin air"
"to budge an inch"
" green-eyed jealousy"
"played fast and loose"
"tongue-tied"
"tower of strength"
"hoodwinked"
"in a pickle"
"fair play"
"stood on ceremony"
" danced attendance"
"short shrift"
"cold comfort"
"Too much of a good thing"
"in a fool's paradise"
"the more fool you"
"dead as a door nail"
" an eye sore"
"a laughing stock"
and wait for it!..."what the dickens!"..yes..and I always thought that referred to Charles Dickens..but no..theyre Will's words..
the list goes on.......
So its thanks to Will..and also a big thank-you to the American actor/producer Sam Wannamaker..for without his unstinting work and dedication.. 'The Globe' wouldn't have risen again for us and future generations to enjoy !

I don't think there's much doubt that old Bill Shakespeare not only made a huge contribution to the English language, but without his contribution, there woudn't be much of an English language. But I never realised how many of our sayings come from him until I read Ellie's posting. I've never really enjoyed reading Shakespeare, but loved watching Laurence Olivier bring it to life. I'd like to visit the Globe, and I thought I might be able to squeeze the old Millenium Falcon through the top, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know what the parking facilities are like there? I was hoping to get a part for old Chuey. With a shave, I thought he might make a fetching Juliet, with C-3PO as Romeo. What do you lot think?
