Taxi recommendation at Gatwick Airport

Having been repeatedly ripped off at airports - "£9 starting fee + £1 per mile sir because of the airport charges, making £13 to the Premier Inn", said without a smile and an unruly grunt loading our luggage - on return we came across a totally different driver recommended by the receptionist at Premier Inn.
Quoted £8.50 to the airport, we had to make a diversion to pick up some items. I asked the driver if this was possible if I paid him a bit extra. "No problem sir". He chatted all the way, took us off route to pick up our things where unfortunately we were kept waiting for 10 minutes. "What's the charge now?" I asked. "Still £ 8.50 sir because I don't like to rip people off like those airport based drivers" He got a tip and I feel his type need to be encouraged and publicised.

So,if you are travelling via Gatwick may I recommend you call United Cars on 01293 429429 and our driver was Gavin - car 70.

The Premier Inn is just across the road from the North Terminal - you can walk there in 2-3 minutes. I stay there frequently.

I know you are a Yorkshireman in the south - but isn't £8.50 a tad extravagant - nevertheless thanks for the 'tip'

This was for the Premier Inn South - formerly Gatwick Lodge.

North was full and I must say the South one was pleasanter - room £29, no jet noise, gardens and lake to walk round and a superb 'eat as much as you want' buffet breakfast for £7.99.

Previously for a 01.00 arival we took the airport taxi to Premier Inn North and were charged £9 - hence my wry comment.

OK - wasn't aware of that one. Nevertheless, I have no trouble sleeping in the one at the North Terminal - never hear a sound
