I can only guess that it's some sort of local Mardi Gras. Looks a damn sight warmer than here in Durham.

It looks much warmer than Somerset at the moment too. It is very cold, with icy winds and now it is drizzling (what a lovely English word!) I am looking forward to some warmth and sun in March when 'my husband and I' come out to check on progress on our Quinta. Shame to have missed Carnival though. Is it every year at the same time, and do they have a parade and things??

Yes it is always shrove tuesday - preparation for the start of lent!

Didn't make it down there today, but I'm sure it was good - I could hear the band from the terrace.

The weather has certainly perked up today after a couple of showery days and it has been really warm sitting out in the sun 8)

Thank you kteee for the information, silly of me to forget about lent, I would imagine that it is celebrated more in Portugal than in England, we tend to just think about it as pancake day!
Must say the weather looks good today, sunny and I bet it is warm. Somerset is sunny but temperatures of about 4 degrees. brrrrr
Look forward to some Algarve sun soon.
