The price of bread !!!

Post by Gary/Gaynor »

Last year I wrote on this site that a loaf of bread and a pint of milk cost 3 euros 40 which I found a bit eye watering even in about the most expensive part of Europe (Holland) that would have been going some. This morning I ventured down to get my Daily Mail as I enjoy a well balanced read and that has gone down to 1 euro 50. Then I made the mistake of getting a loaf of bread :( :( :( that little item cost me 3 euros 45 they are taking the piss :( :(

Perhaps bio-fuels are too blame? The more crops grown for fuel, the fewer crops will be grown for food.

Increasing demand from far east as they get more affluent, fires in Russia , floods in Pakistan and other climatic issues have resulted in a forcasted shortage of grains,
The speculators have moved in and grain futures have rocketed. In the UK farmers are putting wheat into store as the price is rising almost daily.

Its call capitalism. Get used to it prices will continue to rise for a few months yet. Anyway bread is fattening.

No - they just recognised you and know that you are overpaid, underworked and have too many holidays. They obviously thought "here's someone who can afford a little increase - let's make hay whilst Gary's in town". :P :P :P

Russia has announced that it will be imorting wheat following the devastating fires there and when you consider that last year they had visions of doubling their already massive exports you can see what the problem is. The economics of Supply and Demand at their worst

Mind you Gary was you buying Bimbo bread ?- that's always very expensive. Take a trip to Lidl and stock up on their cheaper bread if you have freezer room

You can,t call Bimbo bread !!. The reason it costs so much is not just the wheat content but all those chemicals as well. Why else does it last for so long.

Perhaps the "Eat Smart" is an excuse ?

Hi Gary/Gaynor,

Try the pastelaria at the top of the "in road" opposite Millennium bank - they have a wide range of freshly baked bread every day and very reasonably priced. It is called something like Fabrica Velha.

Happy bread eating :D x

There is always the municipal market. Also the little supermarket near Elle & Ellas (the one on the seaward side) does fresh baked bread rolls. Local bread is much nicer and cheaper.

The little supermarket near Elle & Ellas is Ok for fresh rolls, but as i commented on here last Summer it's the one thing that lets CVO down - the prices in the town supermarkets - rip off.

Never, ever buy Bimbo! That's just not bread, it even makes Kingsmill seem half decent & that's saying something. I don't know why it's so expensive, it's dry, full of air, completely lacking in substance & has no flavour. What are they charging for?
