Route into Carvoeiro

Post by bjay »

Is the approach into Carvoeiro still by Rua do Barranco, I have friends going on Sunday and want to give them good directions.
Anyone got any recent photos?

Yes, the route in is still via the Rua do Barranco but now you are forced to turn up the Monte Dourado hill instead being able to drive through to the square. Through Monte Dourado turn right down market hill and you get back on to the Estrada do Farol heading east.

Looking at the webcam on this site it looks as if traffic is coming down the in road to the square. :? Could anyone in Carvoeiro just now maybe let us know what is happening. Floyd pointed out on another thread today the new sign at the bottom of the Paraiso Road, now downwards for traffic from Monte Carvoeiro.

The road system changed again from 7.00am this morning. I will do my best to explain :? You can now come down the In road into Carvoeiro. As you come into Carvoeiro, there is now a No Entry sign at the end of the Out Road, but people were still driving into Carvoeiro down the Out Road this morning. :o

If you come into Carvoeiro on the In Road you can come down into the square and turn left and go up Estrada do Farol.

Alternatively you can turn left opposite the butcher using the cut through and then turn left again (you can no longer turn right here as the Out Road between here and the square is now closed!). You can then turn right to go up through Monte Dourada or carry on the Out Road out of Carvoeiro.

The Up Road to Monte Carvoeiro is now Rua do Casino. So turn right at the Post Office and go up the road that used to be the down road from Monte Carvoeiro. And yes you have guessed it the old Up Road past Rascals is now the down road from Monte Carvoeiro. :D

You can still not come down Estrada do Farol into the square, you are still diverted up through Monte Dourada and last week the GNR were doing spot checks on people coming down that road and issuing on the spot fines if you were not a resident.

Hope this is of some help :D

Thank you Ma-Ja's for clearing that up for us. A bit more informed now. No doubt there will be more changes to come. :D

Excellent description, Jan (or was that Mark?).

I loved your description of the route TO Monte Carvoeiro where we go "up the down road" :D
You politely omitted to remind us that this would go past MaJa's

The short stretch of Out Road between the square and the cut through:
Does it look like this will re-open any time soon ? or is it to be "pedestrianised" ?

It was Jan - Mark doesn't know how to use PC's just how to cook

With regards to the stretch of Out Road, I think they are going to do exactly the same as they have done on the stretch of In Road between the Post Office and the beach - i.e lay new bricks, stop any parking, lay new pathways and new drainage. So based on the time it took them to do the In Road it could be a little while yet before it opens again

Some confusion as traffic coming down the old in Road now has to follow the GREY path around the road works to go back UP the old in out road.
Some tried to turn left pass the garrafia and up the old OUT road , NO WAY.

NOTE, GNR very active, There are some parking spaces on the IN road for loading and off loading for the shops and for disabled drivers.

We saw one Brit getting a ticket outside of IRISH TIMES, no arguement the signs are there for all to see.
Also keep your eyes open for tow away zone signs on the old out road and outside of carvoero sol hotel.

On Friday we were able to drive down the 'in' road right to the square, follow the road round in front of the square and turn up Estrada de Farol. There was an air of celebration as many locals and visitors were enjoying a Sagres or three. It was of course a holiday so whether the road is stll like that I don't know. There is so much conjecture but I have been told by Portuguese friend that when finished the road going round square will have limited traffic access.

Should have added, that the road down hill past the GNR has access ONLY for GNR and residents, it is blocked off by a barrier and signs by the chapel.

Do you not think if traffic is diverted away from the square by side roads, visitors to Carvoeiro may drive out of the village(not seeing the centre) without making the effort to stop? :( I know when I first visited Carvoeiro and drove down to the square, I was determined to find a parking place and visit this lovely busy little village. Now with no cars blocking the view of the new square it will look even more appealing. To have the square vehicle free would be ideal and I would love it, but I think it is too small a village to do this without losing visitors and business. I think the authorities should really consider a park n ride to reduce traffic in the village, after all you don't need a car once you are in the village. What do others think?

Don't know at the moment time will tell, but for so long visitors have been criticising the square, parking etc and now a lot of work has been done to try to improve the centre of the village so I think we just have to see how it looks when the project is finished. I don't see how the square being less conjested is going to affect visitors and business there are parking places on the periphery of the centre with a short walk to the beach etc. I think park and walk is a better option than park and ride, for people with mobility problems I believe the plan is to have some disabled parking

On the IN road there are a few spaces for disabled drivers alongside 2 for customers of the pharmacy.

There is NO general parking in this area. You will get ticketed.

For those coming down the in road who follow the cut through into the " OUT " road there is NO right turn,
Some are trying this and having to turn round to get back out as there is no square access this way.
