Just a thought. my glasses need changing and I will be travelling down at the end of April and I was just wandering does anyone know if glasses are inexpensive compared to UK or Ireland. good quality glasses are quite expensive over here in Ireland and I was thinking of just getting my eye test done and bringing the prescription with me and purchasing glasses over there. In the meantime i'll continue to go around bumping into walls

definetely Uk for better price . Plus to get children tested here you have to go to opthamologist local opticians will not check there eyes , cost me 60 euros to be told he didnt need glasses !!!

I agree in part. Spectacles are cheaper in UK than in Portugal by a factor of about 33%.

There is no need to go to an ophthalmologist for the examination when there is a U.K. registered optometrist here - albeit that to practice to full U.K. standards the Portuguese authorities have renamed me as Tecnico Paramedico dos Olhos !!

The local optometrists are very limited in not being allowed to use drugs, diagnose disease, examine children, fit contact lenses without ophthalmologist approval etc.. Although they are gradually improving training courses it will probably be another 10 years before they are to the University/Hospital standards of North European practitioners.

By the terms of this Forum, I am not allowed to advertise here but would say that, being aware of the financial situation of my co-expats, I keep my fees as low as possible and approximately half of that quoted by WR2.

I Had no problem with the opthamologist she was great , I just get annoyed having to pay 60 euros when he could be tested for 25 at the opticians here , if they changed the rules , if there was a problem then I would take him to someone more specialised.
