Unfortunately there will be no September Newsletter.

Carol had nearly finished writing it when some computer problem erased everything. We have had two technicians round to see if they could re-instate her script but to no avail.

An interesting 1200 word report disappeared into the aether - she is gutted !!

She apologises but will combine September with October as she has to rewrite the whole thing.

What a shame that this has happened as we all look out for the great newsletters each month.

Hope you get the computer sorted out soon and I will look forward to reading a double issue next month.

Modern technology...

Tell Carol that we all appreciate her hard work and are really sorry that this has happened, bet she said a few 'words' when it happened.

She should keep incremental copies. Once, a few years ago, I lost an entire 32 page magazine and I had to redo it all in just four days! Since then I always save each day's work thus: 0904 for Sept 4th to date. This way all I lose is a day's work.

Buy her a drink (or three, Roy) and cheer her up.

Point taken Michael and when I have finished my second barrel of vinho and my anti-depression tablets I will rewrite the whole b----y thing again.

Really nice to know that you care though "sob sob". It will make a good drunken conversation on our cruise don't you think?

I presume that is the alcohol free version of 'vinho' seeing as I know how much of a tea totaller you are, especially after the late night visit to Inside back in April for Sally's Birthday.

Carol, I sympathise greatly! I 'lost' a long chapter once and had to do a re-write..
the air was blue and I was spitting blood!

I now get Editor to save each one and I also put them on CD..just to be sure.
Im a bit ignorant about PCs..Can anyone tell me, can you lose all documents? I thought they were okay when 'saved'?

Once saved all documents are secure unless the hard-drive crashes. It is always best to copy important documents to an external medium (eg CD or DVD) in case your PC breaks or is stolen. When editing a document regular saves should be done to save you losing what you have input.

There are various ways of retrieving documents or pictures once deleted but normally requires the purchase of some software to do so.

Our studio uses Macs as opposed to PCs and I have to say they do seem more reliable...

Sorry to hear about that Carol, it makes me sick when PCs just decide to pack up and throw hours of your life out the window

Having been through the same I have stocked up on off-PC storage.
The easiest solution for storage of the PC is probably a USB pen as you dont have to keep track of CDs or buy blanks....and they are not expensive anymore either.

More reliable, more stable, ever more user friendly and flexible, etc, etc, etc

Whilst I would change to a Mac in a heartbeat if our in-house software was all compatible (the newest generation operating systems just blow Vista out of the water), the hardware is still "just" hardware like a PCs and therefore, regrettably, mortal.

Totally agree. I use a USB pen and back up frequently. Just as well since my system crashed recently, and there was no alternative but to wipe the hard drive and reload everything. Fortunately son James was around to handle it for me. Maybe you could just do a brief version of September, Carol. I'm sure we would all understand.

There's a strange law about backups:

If you backup weekly on Friday's, you'll crash on a Thursday. If you backup daily at 6pm, you'll crash at 5.58pm.

But its still worth doing !
