Excellent. I now have loads of ideas.
I think I know how I want to advertise and keep the costs down.

If this works out it could be really good.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

Back to the drawing board!

Cowboy - do you mean those pre-packed sandwiches that you can buy in service stations (we have them over here but the choice is very limited)

Something along that line, but fresher Dee W.

Blimey  It just shows you Thunderbolt that from the tiniest of ideas, big things can happen :P

Everybody who has posted on this subject (although I bet el colonel who posted first has lost all track of his/her initial post  ) seems to be very up for it!

Gerry, I can't believe that you are selling the pub - what brought this on :? Or are you thinking of joining the growing ranks of friends in cvo?

I can't wait to see what happens next. I am not in a position to invest with this Project at the moment but I am still willing to throw in any ideas I have along the way. I would feel very proud if something came of it in the future and thought that I had some way contributed, if only from a discussion point of view.

 Hi, sorry I have missed out on all this, I had to go up to London for the day and look what happens!!
Gerry, I appreciate the thought re 'retiring to the Algarve and going into the service industry' But as I am an ex Landlady of a very busy village Pub, I do think I have an idea of the hours and time it takes to get a business going and to keep it going.
Thunderbolt, I will pm you on this, I wounld be really interested in a good sandwich bar and juice bar in cvo. As has been said location it all, it would have to be as close to the square as poss to catch the trade from the beach and the local/tourists who just come to look.
It is amazing how quickly an idea can turn into reality if you really want it to.

Lesley..sorry no offense ment ,natuarly i,d no idea of your backround but now that i do, i stand corrected as that comment does,t partain to yourself..but having been in the biz i,m sure you,ve met more then your fair share of people that reckon it,s a cake walk.
deew ..yea .reckon its time ..im a little fat middle aged aul fella with a growing sense of my own mortality..a sort of burial ground bound if ye know what i mean and as the sage says nobody lies on their deathbed and regrets not spending more time at the office. There are too many silly little things that i,d like to do again..look forward to christmas instead of dreading it..go to midnight mass with my family..even fall asleep in a chair after dinner..time to stop and smell the roses i think...anyway i,d like to feel well again..ye know get up in the morning and feel bright and alive rather then jaded and woozy walk the dogs up into the woods ,get a bit of advice from lesley and ellie and get the garden going ..pub work can be a killer..as the song goes i,m sick and tired of feelin sick and tired...jaysus i,m startin to whinge now,by the way how are you keepin these days you were a bit worn out your self there a while back?i hope your a bit better now ,drink loads a water eat lashings of fruit(great word that lashings ,always puts me in mind of the famous five and ginger beer)and a bit more excerise..yea i know chance i,d be a fine thing..anyway i,d better go now as i,m starting to waffle, take care of yourself now, good luck

Gerry - tell you what, you are doing the absolute right thing. Take time out to enjoy your life instead of helping others to enjoy theirs

What will you do when you leave though? Will you stay local or change completely and try somewhere new?

Going back to feeling knackered (am I allowed to say that :? ) I have been on three holidays this year and when I have returned from each, I have felt more weary than when I went because basically it makes me lazy and and less I do the less I want to do. I just returned from lanzarote on Sunday and the feeling at the moment is that I want to go away again but unfortunately cannot go until Easter next year! So a stage of pseudo depression sets in and I feel sorry for myself. Posting on this forum is great because I have met some decent friends (I hope I can call them friends) but unfortunately some of them are in cvo and that is where I want to be right now :)

Yeah right - sick and tired of always feeling sick and tired.

God! I wish I could brighten up - may be in a couple of weeks eh?

 Gerry, appology accepted, you were not to know that I have quite a few years of experience running a very busy village pub which also did food. And yes I have met a lot of people who think it is an easy living, more fool them eh!
So altho I have not done anything in that line for a while, I and other half (who works far to hard, travels all over the world and is fed up with it all) would like to do 'something' to be busy, now we have bought a lovely house near cvo we would like to spend more time out there, we can't think about it as yet, with family and work commitments, but hope in two years, to be out in Portugal for two to three months and then back to UK for about the same time.
I have always thought a sandwich bar/juice bar would go well, but not the usual soggy sarnies in plastic cartons like the supermarkets and garages sell, something much more upbeat with filled rolls of all different types, filled italian breads, all freshly made, Mmmmmm.
There is a lovely place just off Windmill St. in London that does just this and it is wonderful.
Sorry to hear you are thinking of selling the pub, but I know where you are coming from with the reason why. I could not believe the difference in our way of life when we came out of the trade, time on our hands to go out at night, have friends round for dinner, take the dog for long walks etc. etc.
Good luck in any new venture you make decide on.

Thunderbolt ..sorry about that i didn,t mean to try to tell ye how to sell your idea...just got locked onto a stream of consessness (WHATEVER)and went with the flow..there was a bit with fireeaters an elephant and some helium filled balloons with free drink tags attached also but thankfully ran out of steam  anyway along with everybody else on this forum let me just wish you all the best with this idea.

Gerry,

No offense taken at all. This is an idea I've had for a while and was wondering how to make it happen.

All the suggestions on this post have been invaluable help so I really hope I can make a go of things and make it happen!

Now this is a question for the moderators but as this topic has actually raised quite a lot of interest, is there any way of opening a brainstorming forum where the interested people could take part and then we wouldn't be annoying others with our posts. Either that or we can start a group e-mail.

El Colonel,

I haven't been to paradise island in Silves but I'll make sure to take a wander up there when I'm over in October. Unfortunately it will only be a short visit but I'll be out for a bit longer over New Year.

Hope that whatever you are planning works out well.

Gerry,

Not sure about the elephants but I do have some marketing ideas for a new venture. It's all about freebies and getting people's attention!
Or would a couple of good looking girls do the trick?
