I don't mind paying it and using the motorway as I think it is a good and safe road but I would like to know how it is going to work for us.
I understand that you can go and pay at a post office after using the road but how will that work when you drive back to the airport to drop off a hire car????
It is all very confusing....
The best bet would be for the hire car companies to fit the cars with the device and charge the customer back, afterall when you hire a car you leave a credit card slip with them as a deposit. All they need to do is charge for the use of each customer to that credit card.

Leslie,it would be better to ask the car hire companies directly as they will be the ones who have to get around this headache of a mess. The above mentioned links and an alleged explanation of it just adds makes matters worse.
Maybe the car hire websites will explain this. In Dublin, a few years ago, one of the motorways exiting the city became toll chargeable but the car hire companies at Dublin airport gave full details when collecting the car with information packs and their websites also mentioned how it is paid. I am sure the car hire companies at Faro airport will also follow suite as they don't want an influx of complaints from their customers especially in such a competitive market.

In another travel forum, I came across this post:
For interest I asked Economy care hire (who I use), they contacted Rent Auto and this is their reply, helpful not.
My advice is to buy a temporary dispositive called here as DT (Dispositivo Temporario), this DT is for sale at post offices (all main airports got one), and then clients must make a pre-payment of 10.00 Euros minimum, this value will be deduced each time the clients use the highway. The pre-payments can be made in any pin Machine – Cashier Machine, called here “Multibanco” or at any pay shop, and are valid for the period of 90 days. This DT is for sale at post offices and costs 27 Euros. In post offices clients can also find out how much money they have spent and if they need to made another pre-payment. Further information can be obtained at post offices.
So me or my guests have to buy a thingy at €27 and put €10 on it. I feel a no thankyou coming on.

Re: Tolls on the A22
This might have been asked before but I cannot recall seeing anything relating to the charges which are to be made - will the charges be the same as on the other motorways and has anyone calculated the cost from the airport to either junction six or seven.
Re: Tolls on the A22
My usual car rental company thinks that there will be some sort of a decision today as to the exact details for the tolls but so far they just don't know how they will manage the problem

Re: Tolls on the A22
I quite often take the 125 by choice since I find it more enjoyable if I am not in a hurry. Perhaps I am the only one but I think I will just give the motorway a miss from now on.

James, as it is Steen's partner car hire company we use Algarvedriver.com) I was voicing my opinion on here so that if he heard anything new I could then get the info first hand.......James Faro wrote:Leslie,it would be better to ask the car hire companies directly as they will be the ones who have to get around this headache of a mess. You might change your mind when all the Portuguese stop using the motorway as well. I can remember it taking over 2 hours from the airport to Cvo, before the A22 was builtMike Banks wrote:I've never had a problem with the N125 so I'll be joining you!Graham wrote:I quite often take the 125 by choice since I find it more enjoyable if I am not in a hurry. And the rush hour at certain times at certain junctions when the locals want to rush home is crammed full of dangerous impatient drivers!Aitch wrote:You might change your mind when all the Portuguese stop using the motorway as well. Re: Tolls on the A22
I just drove back from Guia shopping; the foundations are in for the gantry just before the Algoz junction, didn't see one at Alcantarilha but they're doing one now just before the Lagoa turnoff
I went into the Total garage in Lagoa on the way home where 95 sem chumbo is now €1.53, the two people in front of me both put €10 worth of petrol in, can't see them as potential toll users
but I hear that there's to be a toll holiday for residents living within 20km of the A22 until mid 2012 so the 125 should be good for car rental visitors until then

seems this info is wrong, sorry; there seems to be 10 free trips, then a 15% discount until June 2012 for residents, hope of a toll holiday has disappearedsunman wrote: but I hear that there's to be a toll holiday for residents living within 20km of the A22 until mid 2012 so the 125 should be good for car rental visitors until then

Re: Tolls on the A22
According the Algarve Resident NINE people have died on the N125 In January! That figure ,dreadful as it is, will rise when more motorists avoid the A22 toll charges and opt for the N125.
