Re: Importing a car to portugal
I have bought a new Land Rover Discovery - LHD that I will import once I have residency status - I can't do it before I have done that.
I am under no illusion that I am taking on a mammoth task and as I promised I will post the details here once I get it underway.
With regard to your Porsche - I suspect it has a large CO2 output which will not help when it come to them assessing the duty?

Re: Importing a car to portugal
Presumably you have to wait for 12 months to satisfy the requirements for importation free of taxes on a change of residence concession. Since you have to start this matriculation process within 6 months of obtaining a residencia you obviously need to time things carefully.
Perhaps, however, you merely intend to import and pay the taxes. I am not sure how the residencia fits into that equation. Having looked at the relative prices I cannot believe that there are not savings to be made provided that you can keep your health and sanity during the process. Good luck.

Re: Importing a car to portugal
Hi Steve
You have to resident status to import and yes I am going down the importation 'free of taxes' route. We are hoping to be arriving next April but might just start it in the New Year.
I have read all the tales of woe both here and elsewhere and am aware that it is tantamount to 'self-inflicted injury' but I will give it a go. We have two new cars and we might just do my Wife's instead as hers is a very low CO2 emitting car. We haven't decided yet.

You will of course need to able to prove that you have had the car for one year in the UK before starting the matriculation process. Hence my reference to timing.

Hence opting for my Wife's car if there is any change of plan!

Re: Importing a car to portugal
Two questions - A) Has anyone experience with importing an old "classic" car into portugal B) exactly what is "residency" - is this simply owning a property or is it actually living for a min no. of days/year?
Re: Importing a car to portugal
Resisdency does reduce the costs of matriculation but does have tax implications ( take professional advice ).

Re: Importing a car to portugal
I have just had an "outline" quote from a company in Almancil who do car imports. I want to import a 20 yr old classic Jagauar - they reckon €15,000-25,000 - can this be correct

Re: Importing a car to portugal
On another forum a thread has started where a contributor has imported an ex spanish reg LHD, purchased in the UK, reg on UK plates, owned for 12 months and now matriculated.
He is resident and the cost was 100,s euros NOT 1000,s.
Costs are related to emission levels so the older/dirtier the car the higher the tax.
It is one I will be following with interest.

I still cant believe the figures she says "15.000 to 25.000" this isnt 15,000 - 25,000 - so I have asked again for clarification - fingers crossed!!
