I have followed the many topics raised on this forum for some considerable time and have never really felt it necessary to reply until I read the exchanges by TD and others yesterday.

I too am an Irishman who spends a considerable amount of time in The Algarve and I am partly in agreement with the 'gist' of TD's point of view.

We first came to The Algarve in 1980 and bought a property in Vilamoura - not the Vilamoura you see today - it was a nice fishing village with some very pleasant restaurants. Within 10 years it was transformed into the over commercialised place it is now. The charm was lost and we moved to Carvoeiro in 1994.

We experienced, in Vilamoura all of the things TD finds unacceptable (English Breakfast, Disco, Live Football etc) all the things we believed we had left behind in the UK. Even though we lived in the UK, our hope was that Portugal was going to be that little piece of Paradise away from the hussle and bustle of everyday London life.

We decided to move and after looking at numerous places we 'found' Carvoeiro and believed it offered the ideal haven. In recent times there has been an increase in the numbers of the 'Vilamoura Syndrome' in Carvoeiro with the emergence of the types of places we had hoped we left behind.

We don't really find them intrusive as they are in the right place.

While I think there is room for everybody in this ever increasing commercial world I believe there should be a balance. I am not recommending 'Blair' type balance where we are told what we are going to have whether we like it or not - more a case of fitting in with what the many factions like. We then have a choice.

In their place the businesses in Estrada do Farol, The Square and Rua do Baranco are ideally placed to offer you a choice - striking the right balance. You go there or you do not - very simple. It is what you find there that creates the problem.

We came to Portugal to enjoy Portuguese things. If we wanted to enjoy English Breakfast/Live Football and the like we would have gone to Bridlington, Blackpool or other such places.

During a recent visit to Spain we saw the transformation of their resorts into not so mini Blackpools etc. It happened in Vilamoura will Carvoeiro be next?

I suspect that is TD's point - will catering for the masses who require non-Portuguese facilities and culture create another province of dear old 'Blighty' or is it already here - remember Albufeira during Euro 2004

Today Carvoeiro offers a very good cosmopolitan balance - the Portuguese, British, Dutch, German and Irish communities all blend nicely together in a Portuguese environment - let's keep it that way.

So, I guess it is a matter of getting the balance right for those who want a Portuguese Carvoeiro and making the appropriate choice. From one with a vested interest - please make the right one.

What exactly is wrong with being English. Before to many of you so called locals take over all, of the moral high ground, how many of you speak Portuguese for example. Some people only visit for the Sun , Sea and Sand . Good luck to them. Give holidaymakers what they want. Save culture for cold and rainy days. Long live the Empire!

I have travelled all over Portugal and love it to bits but I/we prefer The Algarve - we are intent on making our home here. I don't speak the language but learn all the time and I get by with the little I have mastered.

I do not think there is anything wrong with the English or about being English - but keep it in England please.

There is a fantastic huge football screen in a restaurant just before Rocha Bravo called Julio's. It's a big place but they don't make newcomers feel welcome, and you'll be lucky not to be shoved in a corner. There will be only one smiling face and that'll be TD in the best seat in the house on his fifth pudding. All the waiters will be around him because he's been there before. Happy viewing. Look listen, TD doesn't have shares in Julio's ok. Nor does he get a free meal for putting his wonderful accolades where others despise it - Lets get this clear.

Mad, come and enjoy your football in Carvoeiro wherever you want to watch it. TD's moving to Quinta do Lago soon where he belongs.
