Tolls on the A22

I am led to believe that the A22 was built on European funds and it was agreed at the time that this would become a toll road to help pay back the loan. If so its time to pay the piper... cest la vie

We have used toll roads in Portugal, France, Spain and even the UK. My gripe is that there will be no booths to pay at - every other toll road I have used, even in Portugal, has toll booths. If they want people to pay they should make the facilities to do so easily available. They seem to be doing it on the cheap and hoping to make lots of money out of fines. The other concern is that the EN125 in its current state is not a suitable nor safe alternative. It will no doubt regain its status of the most dangerous road in Europe.

Sam, Im a bit lost here how are they to collect any money without toll booths The one thing I did notice travelling down the A22 last November is that some parts of that were also in need of repair ...

The onus is on you the driver ( private cars ) to make the necessary arrangements by buying a pre paid box/chip that camera reads.
Otherwise you visit the various pay centres and they look up your reg number and bill you accordingly.

It does sound chaotic , I can see the GNR having great fun looking up car registrations on their road side checks and billing/fining drivers for unpaid toll charges.

We really do need a definitve response from the car hire companies as to what we the customers are to do.

I am sure this will cause endless problems, especially for people ie:tourists coming in by car from other countries who don't about the electronic tolls, until they arrive and then confusion sets in. Apparently it has caused endless problems in the O'Porto areas. Perhaps the powers that be who thought this stupid thing up will realise what a silly idea this has been and wasted a lot of money in the process setting it up. The EN125 will be like a rat race and maybe many accidents including fatalities will result, but what do they care as long as its revenue. Only time will tell & too late once the horse has bolted.

When all this was first reported, it was said that it wouldn't happen until the N125 had been upgraded as the road was dangerous. I take it then that this hasn't happened?

Sunman, they are opening a permanent one in Faro, but I don't know where existing ones are, although I'm led to believe you can get them through some post offices. The company has also said the service will be available on the new website from Saturday.
