Sorry, there's no way I'd eat marmite even if it does work against mozzies. And I'd steer clear of anyone who'd eaten marmite as well. I can't imagine anything worse than smelling of the stuff!!! Yuck!

Conkers is what you need to keep spiders at bay, apparently they don't like the oil! As for mossies, I eat Marmite, but as Michael is from the hate Marmite brigade I tend not to eat too much of it! Avon do a dry oil spray (the green one) that works just as well and smells infinitely better than Marmite. I also use Johnson and Johnson's "Off", which I have only ever been able to buy in Turkey! A quick spray of that before heading out of an evening and it works a treat!

To stop a mossie bite from stinging/itching use ammonia, if there is none available then pee on the area! Nasty but it works! Not sure if it will work on a spider bite though!

Those plug-in, er....plugs that contain that anti-repellent are very good as loads of mosquitoes get allured to them and drop like flies! Used outside the villa - well that is a bit wasted!

Britain's colonial cousins in Australia have that Vegemite alternative to Marmite. It is supposed to taste more bitter than Marmite -if that is possible!

Mac, human beings can't smell it..its just the mossies..thats why I eat marmite toast for brekkie when Im in Carvoeiro..keeps the mossies away.......

Of course humans can smell it, stick your nose in the jar and tell me you can't smell it! If you don't like Marmite it must be amongst the worst smells in the world.

Humans can't smell it once it's been digested , it's not like you smooth it all over your body! Though that would save on the tanning time . It is the B12 that repels the mozzie's, doctor's used to prescribe B12 tablets to holiday makers who were particularly plagued by mozzie bites.
I love Marmite, to compare it in any way to Bovril is sacrilege, Bovril's a nasty meat extract made from bits of the animal that even the animal wouldn't touch.

My judy got bitten on her breast this year, it took me a fortnight to suck the poison out, she said it was ok! on the first day but I said she could get delayed infection.

I heard a guy in Faro got bitten on the temple, they sucked and sucked and sucked for weeks and still got nothing. Then some weeks later the same Faro guy was bitten on the arse and voilà there it was So Faro guys if you felt like, just a little prick
on the arse it's propably only a mozzie

Apparently mosquitoes have an aversion to tarmac. When it gets hot or boiling ,the smell is so bad they divert! May be a good idea to 'employ' a tax-evading tarmacking traveler.

I read on another expats forum last year about the brown recluse/mediterranean recluse spider which originated from mediterranean regions but is also now found in the USA . Someone was bitten by one of these and received a very nasty infected bite. Habitat: Log piles, sheds, garages, and other places that are dry and generally undisturbed. They can also be found in wardrobes, shoes, in bed sheets of infrequently used . It looks quite harmless but when threatened or is disturbed it will bite.

In log piles eh! I'll initiate that fact when I next have clients, it'll keep the log consumption down.
