Bifa's 1st Darling here

Sopa was related to Jorge Pardal's family (President of the Junta) he had a wife and family but prefered to live the way he did. Carminda (the lady who runs the Bom Dia mini market) Jorge's mother tried to get him to take a bath and live "normaly" but he didn't want to. He fell (some say he was pushed) into the sea one winters night and was washed up at Senhora da Rocha.

Tia Olímpia lived between the chemist and the old sociadede, her husband was in a wheelchair for many years and died before her. She died quite a few years ago well into her 90s. There is a drawing of her in Os Três Jotas for any of you who are interested.

Now who remembers Alfaiate the old dog that slept outside the postoffice? The old, almost blind dog that's in the square outside O Piu during the summer is a distant relation to him!!!

And WHO remembers the Café Rocha????

The litle old guy in the baseball cap must be Luis Biafra I reckon. Another well known figure from Carvoeiros days past. Used to be a fisherman but gave it up for the drink! He would be likely to ask you to sleep with him but I would not recommend it!

But I do love reading about these folk that you& your little darling know of!
Tell me..is he ever 'co-herent'/sober?..he seems to speak some English as well...
I'd love to interview him..

which one is the 'Bom Dia ' mini market please? I never know the names of these places!

First of all it's darling'S there are lots of us

Luis Biafra is related to the people who own the mini market next to the sports shop on the road going into Carvoeiro on the right, Cardoso is their name. They are related to the man from the O Buque opposite the Lanterna just before you go over the old bridge into Portimão, so it's really quite a small place when you think about it!!

Years ago Biafra and his friend Zé de Guiné (old friends of Biffa's!!) used to paint houses, great team until lunch time like many here

They both spoke very good English, and still do although I'm not sure where Zé de Guiné is. At one point they didn't have anywhere to sleep ( oh dear, this is getting complicated, too many people) so the boy who owned the old house which later became the Casa de Chá (and is now Sigarvela, I think

) let them sleep there. One night they fell asleep with a lit cigarette and almost burnt the place down, luckly Paulo hadn't started the renovations. I think Paulo and his English girlfreind Merril went to Norwich and opened a tea house there and from what I heard they were doing quite well, but that could have been his brother Mario

Hey I remember the Casa da Cha..but think it folded soon after we left Algarve??.........
So this Luis speaks English...interesting tale you tell(ever thought about writing yourself?)..
Someone told me that the owner of casa da cha & english wife moved to west country...or was that his brother

Would it be dodgy to try and speak to this Luis fella d'you think?
I love finding out about these characters of CVO?
I wonder if Joe is tearing his hair out at us 'taking over' House on Hill?
Hope he doesn't mind?

No, I don't mind the guests in my 'House on the Hill' talking among themselves. As long as they bring a few bottles of Vinho Verde and throw me a nod now and then.
What I don't like is when they get rowdy and start an arguement.... they could end up going down into the sea the quick way!
I find it very interesting, these charachers of CVO.
Who's the squatter here anyway?

Why is everyone ignoring the word 'squatter'?

All these people are very interesting and are not exclusive to CVO, but they do show a real human side of the place. We have people like them here in Dublin. Most of them are homeless. One of you should write a little book about them.
I have been looking at my photos of CVO and see that there is a row of small houses on the road up the hill. They are overlooking the bay and seem to be in better nick than my favourite. Anyone know anything about them? They also appear unoccupied at the moment.

cafe rocha was opposite the actuall post office-it has been a souvenir shop, ran by Sr.Rocha 's grandchildren for some years.This was the place half the village used to go for their bica and medronho,etc., and watch T.V., as this was one the of three places with a T.V., in the late 60's and 70's.

As for the houses next to the House on the hill, it looks like no one wants to see them turned into blocks of apartments.In fact the owners don't seem to be interested in them, as they could be restored and would look great and habitable, somehow these people who had them built in the1920's or about haven't used them for the last 20 or 30 years. Carvoeiro Beach was well renowned for summer holidays, as the sea in this area was prescribed by doctors, for being benneficial for various ailments.
