GNR

Post by biffa »

It appears that the Carvoeiro GNR post is to close very shortly. Seems a strange move, especially just before summer, and we will have to rely on the GNR based in Lagoa to keep us crime free!

Coincides nicely with article in todays Correio da Manha which reports soaring crime figures for Portugal generally!

GNR Post

Post by biffa »

In todays Correio da Manha there was mention of rising crime in Albufeira. I feel that a little like "when America sneezes the UK catches a cold" we, in Carvoeiro, are well placed to be next in line for some Albufeira crime overspill!

Even if that were not to happen the proposal to close the local GNR post is crackers (my opinion!).

Thus I intend to ask the Parish Council what their view is and what they are going to do about it and depending on their answer either support their view or, if they are acquiescent to the closure, organise a campaign to maintain the GNR post.

I would appreciate any views members may have in order to gauge likely support.

Agree with you about the ridiculous closure of the GNR in Carvoeiro Biffa,
I'm not sure as a non-resident but home owner in CVO what support we could give, but if you have any ideas we would be pleased to help.

I think you need to get some sort of support from people who are property owners or who live in Carvoeiro (or both). Being both, and having had much support from the GNR in Carvoeiro in the time we've lived here, we do not want to see the place shut down. How do petitions and the like go down in Portugal? Does anyone know?

A petition went around Carvoeiro about a month ago......everybody I know signed it, and from what I saw there was quite a few. Although it doesn't seem to have made any impact! :x

GNR Post -Petition to prevent closure

Post by biffa »

The Junta da Freguesia is fighting the closure of the GNR Post and it is still possible for bona fide residency card holding foreign residents to go there and sign a Petiton (know here as "Abaixo Assinadas").

In addition I have put Petition forms in Smilers,Sullys, The Irish Times and Hemingways so do pass by one of those places and sign please. The Petitions have to be in by the end of May so please hurry.

The reason for closure is cost saving which is nonsense as the Post costs the State nothing - all expenses being covered by the Lagoa Câmara and/or the local Junta.

One proposal is that the Post will close betwen midnight and 8 a.m. with a mobile patrol from Lagoa replacing it. Not good in my opinion and with recent matters at Praia da Luz I feel an increased rather than decreased Police presence is needed to reassure residents and tourists alike that Carvoeiro is a safe place.

Just a thought on this subject.

I have a friend staying in Sesmarias who , along with about 10 others, were burgled last week.

Seems a daft decision to close the station imo.

For all out there at present , if this is going on at moment , please be vigilant.
