Thank you for all your replies. Have just sorted out all my gear ready for our next visit in a few weeks time. By the way, where are the nearest fishing tackle shops ?

Carvoeiro!! Up on Restaurant Hill near to Havana Bar. They have souvenirs and tackle (very useful shop). Also live bait, which can be hard to find sometimes.

All this talk of fishing at Algar Seco etc., I've tried three times with various baits, rigs, depths and so far have caught zero. Anyone out there got any ideas of a rig/bait combo off the rocks please.

There is a sea fishing shop (don't know if it does course) next to the Club Naval in Portimao, seems to hold all the gear, didn't seem overpriced (well ok a bit!).
Been out on the Nitucha a couple of times and coming over this year for 5 or 6 trips out with clayton (wife permitting!).

Do as the locals do... 5m rod, long line, lead weight and some sardines for bait. Also a bucket of smelly fish-meal-mush which you throw over the edge to attract the fish.

Observe the moon and the tides and get to know feeding times.

Observe the weather and how light and water clarity affects their ability to see us.

Sit in a local coffee shop and let the seasoned fishermen tell you when the tide comes from Spain and brings fish with it.

Carry everything in an old bucket and forget about formal fishing clothing and gadgets. Apart from rod and tackle, all you need is a knife. You don't even need a bottle opener if you take twist-cap beers.

Don't fish when there's lightning for obvious reasons, unless you are sturdy enough to wield a 5m rod that's not made from carbon fibre.

I've caught mackerel, mullet, bass and a sort of pipe fish. And sole, but that was off the breakwater at Praia da Rocha. And of course there were all those who got away... especially the "peixe porco".

There are so many great places to fish, from Carrapateira and "Trem Trem" on the west coast to Ingrina to Salema to Vale de Lama to Ferragudo...

I do miss it
