is air con a must?

My fiance and I are planning on coming to carvoeiro from Canada this July for our honeymoon. After looking at many of the villas advertised we've noticed that many of them don't have air conditioning. Are we going to roast if we get a place without it? So far the places that we are most liking in other respects don't seem to have air con...but if it's a must, we'll keep looking. Thanks for your help!

I don't think it is a must, we have a house just outside Carvoeiro and we don't have air con. Yes it gets hot in July and August but we make do with plenty of fans to keep the air moving.

The only time we would have liked air conditioning is a couple of years ago we went out to be greeted by a heatwave with the temperatures nearing the 40's. But that is not the norm.

Make sure the villa has plenty of fans or book extra and I think you will be fine.

The nice thing about Portugal is that mostly it cools down in the evenings allowing you to get a good nights sleep....mind you as you said you will be on your honeymoon....so who needs sleep!!!!!!

WE did fit a combined aircon/heating system and it has helped bookings.
We dispensed with fans ,NOT because they did not work but because of the noise and the fact they were being left to run all day.

Aircon once it reaches the requd temp switches off.

Personally, I don't like aircon, as I don't think it is very healthy, especially to sleep with it on. I have only once or twice felt the need for it, when it reached 45 and 47ºC a couple of summers ago. Normally, there is a breeze on the coast.

Agree with you Bruxy, air con is not good for the skin and I do not like it at night time, feels like you cant breath or swallow properly......

Would much rather just open a window or two and let the breeze blow through the house.

I don’t like it either. We have aircon in every room at home, and have not switched it on in 4 years. it gives me a kinda creepy feeling. I have aircon in the car which is a must when stuck in a jam in mid summer, but if I have it on for too long I get a slight headache

Yes, that is what happens to me digger, usually get a headache in hubby's BMW if we drive for too long with the air con on. But it is a must in a car during the summer in Portugal.

Air con is a nice to have option but not essential. Bear in mind that for it to work you need to keep the doors and windows shut. I prefer to have the lounge doors wide open during the day. Fans then help to move the air around. At night you need something during July/August and whether that be fans or air con it will make some noise. Only sleep with the windows open if you have good anti-mossie filters fitted to them.
