Portugal to hold first-ever cell phone movie competition
Lisbon - Portugal will this weekend host its first-ever contest dedicated to selecting the best short movies made in the country with mobile phones, organizers said.
Ten finalist films made entirely with cell phone cameras will go on display on a large screen at a two-day alternative film festival which gets underway on Friday in Lisbon and the public will vote to select the best three.
The movies have all been edited and in some way reflect this year's theme of the fourth annual "Olhares" festival which is "unbalances".
The goal is to show how "an instrument which we use every day, like a mobile telephone, can in the hands of a creative producer revitalize the act of filmmaking," the Chapito cultural centre which is organizing the festival said in a statement.
The festival will also display 30 of the best international films made using mobile phones or digital cameras which took part at the Forum des Images in Paris in October as well as 48 films from around the world made through more conventional video or Super-8 cameras.
In 2004 US producer of independent films and festivals, Zoie Films, held what it said was the worlds first festival dedicated to films made by cell phones, which are increasingly being used to take pictures, play music and surf the Internet in addition to make calls. -- Agence France Presse
