Do your kids speak Portuguese Borris? If not, I think 12 and 16 is too old to be put into a local Portuguese school and expect them to cope with the language and get a good education. Most kids learn a foreign language best before 7 years old. I have known of older kids going into local schools but they will generally be kept down a year or two, until their Portuguese improves and some find it quite daunting.

The Portuguese Ministry of Education has a useful site. This is the link to Lagoa but you can set it to any Concelho. The named schools are hyperlinks which will take you to details and in some cases include individual school websites

Agreed would be a non starter for Lea but Ric may well be OK in a local school if he could get over the initial frustration (and he might) We are all learning Portuguese but it's not the easiest language to get right, especially as spoken on the Algarve!Bruxinha wrote:Do your kids speak Portuguese Borris? Next year's fees for the International Section of the International School at Porches start at €4950 and go up to €8750. For a child of 12 the fees would be €8100. School dinners and transport if required are extra. Plus there are registration fees etc. My son goes there, so feel free to ask if you need any more info.

Hi Sea Breeze,
A friend of mine is Elaine Evans and I have in the past assisted Elaine with 6th form students taking their exams at the school. Both Elaine and her husband Kelvin live near us as does John Butterworth.
I am surprised that the fees are increasing, as I looked at the present prospectus as set out above on the website.

Re: International School Fees / Good Schools
I know it's not for those who live so far west, but there's a new international school opening in Tavira in Sept 2006.
The website has all the details: http://www.east-pt.com/
I understand the fees (+ projected fees) are also on the site.
