Computers Problems and solutions

Post by Avvie »

Do we have any computer whiz people on board? Where would be the correct place to post queries, or do we have enough clever people interested to make it worth having a dedicated section? Comments appreciated.

Although not a certified 'techy', I am also quite happy to offer whatever assistance my experience with computers can provide. If I don't know the answer myself, I usually know someone who does!

My particular fields of expertise include image manipulation (PhotoShop, etc), desktop publishing (Freehand, PageMaker, Illustrator, etc), and website design (Dreamweaver, PageMill, etc).

I reckon a dedicated IT section would be a good idea as a first port of call, but don't forget that there are lots of dedicated IT forums dotted around...

Kaza  :!: My daughter downloaded this and now I can't get rid. It also seems to have a mind of its own and interferes with things. It also appears to have a dial up connection activated. I've tried numerous times to erase using add/delete software option in control panel but gives an error message and won't allow deletion. Running Windows XP. Any advice :?:

Hey and this radio show thing. :? HELP!!!!!!!!

Steen and Dalcassian kindly sent me a copy of the show by e-mail (links) to download BUT no joy. I have an Applemac laptop and there is no "right click mouse feature" in order for me to click and save it somewhere. If I click with my Mac Mouse it just starts to play it. I am sure if I really bothered to sit down and work it out slowly I would suss it out BUT I am too busy and impatient to do that. So any Mac snobs (as I was recently referred to :P ) out there, who know what to do post here or pm me please. Merci. 8)

You get a pile of spyware free with Kazaa. Kazaa itself should uninstall ok, I suspect something else is stopping uninstalls.
This might take quite a bit of time.
First off, download Spybot and run it. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/, and then the first Download Here button. This programme is quite safe to use. I've never had a problem letting it delete what it wants.
Do you have Anti-Virus? If not get some and make sure it is up to date. Run a full scan.
Are you on broadband and do you have a firewall? If not you need one.

Right click on the task bar (the thing at the bottom of the screen with the start button on it) and select Task Manager. Check in processes how many Iexplorer entries there are. If you aren't actually using Internet Explorer, there shouldn't be any, but the nasty programmes tend to run a few copies.

Try the above and report back

Bruxy,

If I remember correctly from my Mac days*, you'll need to hold down either the 'Ctrl', 'Alt' or 'Apple' keys while clicking in order to have the same effect as right-clicking on a Windows machine.

It's funny - if I was sat infront of the Mac, I'd probably be able to do it with my eyes shut, but for some reason I can't remember exactly in order to explain it!

You should speak to your webmaster-man Duuude! and have him set the Kiss FM MP3 to stream from your website!

* Yes, LagartoRoxo is a former Mac-user and closet Mac-lover - I trained on them for years before reluctantly converting to PC as the Mac service and parts availability wasn't up to much when I arrived in Portugal. Was never a Mac-snob, though... who called you that?

Avvie & PM,

FYI, I also recommend regular scanning of your computer using LavaSofts' Ad-Aware SE which you should be able to download free from here - I use Spybot as well, and find that the combination of the two means that there isn't much chance for anything that shouldn't be on my computer getting to my computer!

I run Spybot first, but often find that Ad-Aware finds a few things that Spybot missed.

Cool LR. 8)

Thanks for that. I'll have a go. Duuude is just jealous and slags my mac off as much as possible actually...in a joking manner...well at least I think he is joking. :? :P I have to be nice to him though as he is a sweetie and helps me out a lot.

If you are a good boy I'll bring my laptop along to visit you on Thursday and you can stroke the keyboard. :D

In answer to your question, in the incredibly small writing bit, I think it was someone on this forum that said I was in danger of becoming a mac snob...he or she was wrong anyhow...I mean I am just a SNOB full stop.

Ooo! Can I stroke it and lovingly caress it? Awesome! I'll try not to drool on the keyboard... but I'm not making any promises.
