Restaurant Prices
Just back from 2 weeks in CVO - Have been going to CVO for past 15 years ( 3 visits per year). In the past year prices have gone crazy.
Restaurant prices around the square are usually more expensive but this practice has now spread to restaurant hill. From the starters to the desserts prices are up approx 30%. Even the cost of minerals for the kids have gone crazy. Prices are now in line with rip off Ireland.
If the weather ever improves in northern Europe, Carvoeiro town will go back to what it was 10 years ago.
More and more of the people in the villas will stay at the villas and the only winner will be the Intermarche & Plus outlets which means euros going out of and not into Carvoeiro.
Another observation was the increase in the presence of the GNR, they seem to love towing parked cars away from the top end of the taxi rank. They should have proper no parking signs so that visitors know where to park.
The new moto for carvoeiro should be:
You never get a second chance to make a first impresssion.

I`m also back after 2 weeks in Carvoeiro. We also found prices in
restaurants to have gone up quite a bit. The prices has gone up, but
not the quality or value for money and that´s the problem in Portugal
overall. I´ve worked with Portuguese textile companies in the north
for many years, but the last 5 years things have just gone down the
drain for them. They are(were) providing the same thing as always, but
the only thing that has increased are the prices, not the quality or the
service. So no wonder they get runned over. I feel it the same thing in
the Portuguese tourist-sector.
A lot of people say less people comes to the Algarve, the reason I think
is you can get much more value for money in Turkey, Croatia, Greece,
Bulgaria etc if you are a family with a limited budget for your holiday.
It´s the same sun, sand is sand, water is water.
Unless Portuguese tourist destinations doesn´t start to offer better
value, I think the visiting-numbers will decline. Frankly I don´t mind
personally as we rent a villa and spend a very quiet relaxed time there,
but this summer I was asked more then once by sad restaurant-owners
why there were less tourists. Portugal is an example of a country where
you have a lot of jobs originally created for lower incomes, but that today
are caught in a middle income-level with the same output, where international competition is leathal.....

We have been going to Carvoeiro for 12 years and have also notice the prices rising in the toursist areas. A meal out is just as expensive as back in England.
On a typical 2 week break we used to eat out most nights, possibly staying at the villa/apartment to eat in say 3 nights.
On our last break in June this year, we stayed in more than we went out to eat, due to the prices. So the winners are the intermache/supermercado's and the losers the restaurants.
Staying away from the tourist areas can reduce the price, but if you havent got a car not much help.

Having read recent comments what exactly are the prices for a typical 3 course meal with wine.
Here in the Bristol area in a half decent place you will spend for 2 £55-£70 thats 80-100 euros.
We have paid this year in the algarve no more than this and that was for fresh fish on a beachside location in one of the more expensive places in Albufeira.
If we don,t each fish then we would struggle to get to 60 euros and average under 50.
So is CVO more expensive ?

Interesting. In the bit of Portugal where our house is a main course costs around 6 or 7 euros. The most expensive place we go to is the restaurant on the beach (literally) at Milfontes which is around 10 euros. Reason is I suppose that nobody round our way could afford CVO prices. We are only 20 to 30 miles north of the Algarve as the crow flies.

It is definitely different prices here than the rest of Portugal but again, it is a tourist destination.
I however agree that if the prices go up, the quality of the food should be impeccable.
I know that some restaurants have had good and bad reviews but we used to go to a restaurant quite often and liked the food and the size of the plates. However, as soon as the tourist season started, the place reduced by more than half and the prices stayed the same. That to me isn't right.
However, as people have said, there are some really nice restaurants around Carvoeiro who still provide fantastic food for reasonable prices or if slightly more expensive, make up for it by the quality of the dishes.
It's not all bad here!

Restaurant Prices
What a sorry state of affairs when the truth about a subject is noticed by so many people except probably those that should be taking notice.
On this particular subject I think that every Restaurant and Bar Owner in Carvoeiro should be made by law to read the "Restaurant Prices" posting and punished by death if they do not put their pricing policy in order.
Yes I know cos I've heard it all before when you are in a tourist area you expect tourist prices, but not the way they have increased over the last couple of years, with no increase in service, quality, and smiles- My god Smiles I just about remember them in Carvoeiro's dining and drinking establishments.
I am sure that all of my contemporaries who have been here for a good few years like me realise that CVO aint no Val do Lobo,Quinta do Lago,
Peurto Banus, Peurto Portals, Antibes etc etc and thank goodness it isnt
So what else has CVO got to offer
The reason people come to CVO either as a partial resident or a holiday maker apart from Sun Sea and Vinho is Service civility and reasonable prices. Yes This is where I came in. Sharpen up before you just havent got a business left.
And for goodness sake pour that lousy Tagus Beer down the drain, tear up your contracts for 35cents for 3000 litres and get some decent stuff back
