Babysitters
Babysitters
Please could anyone give details of any english speaking babysitters who have their own transport (only 2KM from village) who charge reasonable hourly rates, not tourist prices? Thank you
There's someone in the News this week (you can see the whole thing online these days) who I know who doesn't charge much at all. I'm not allowed to say who on here (advertising rules) but if you look for someone who descibes themselves as 'granny-like' you'll find the one. She's local to you. I also know a 17 year old who charges only €5 an hour in Carvoeiro too. PM me if you want more on that one.

Think if I had young kids again I would be very dubious about leaving them with someone so young..
and my biggest fear would be FIRE !......
When H was in London Fire service he experienced several incidents of their being called out ..to find a kitchen gone up in flames..where a 'child ' had been left in charge of little ones....
one case ended in tragedy.....
another was where they found a '12 year old' looking after 3 little uns...their parents having 'gone away for the weekend'...
the 12 yearold had tried cooking chips and the place had gone up in flames...
Luckily they were rescued..and police had to get the social services in to look after them..
If you leave your children with anyone..please make sure they are registered minders and or at least have good references..
Children are very precious

There is a difference surely between babysitting for a couple of hours and a couple of weeks. I mean lets get some perspective here! Any parent leaving their children with anyone other than grandparents or guardians (and by guardians I do mean responsible adults) whilst they take a holiday need a slap
As a 14 year old I regularly babysat to earn extra pocket money, and provided the 14 year old in question is sensible and known to the family then there should be no problems. There was always a contact number left for me should I need one and one of the parents always telephoned during the evening to make sure everything was alright.

I agree with you Sharon - so long as the 14 year old is sensible and well known to the family an evenings babysitting should be no problem.
This issue arose from a 14 year old offering his or her services to somebody unknown over the internet. I would not allow a 14 year old stranger to look after children. In fact I would not let any stranger look after my children unless they were suitably registered with the correct authorities and I could have checkable references.

Overall, as in most things, I think common sense should prevail.

Excellent site Jeremy!
I had 3 young ones and would not have left them with someone I consider to be 'still a child'.
But we rarely left ours..always family orientated our children were included in any outings..(thats what I like about the 'continental style' where venues are family friendly
)
On the rare occassion that Hub and I ventured to the theatre or cinema( a treat in London's West end)..my Ma or Ma-in-law sat with them....
or a very trusted friend of mine who had kids of her own.
Look after the little ones
