MOBILE PHONE SERVICE PROVIDERS

Can any one advise ? My mobile is set for international roaming.
I have used it on a number of occasions in several countries around the world without problem. In the last 18 months I used it several times during visits to CVO. This time however it logged itself to TELECEL and would not connect any calls, strangely, as I returned to Faro airport today it changed its sign to OPTIMUS, out of curiosity I tried a call and it connected. I had until that point assumed that the problem was either with my phone or the UK service provider. Not being well versed in these things, is it possible to select the provider as I now know that one will work and not the other. The failure did cause inconvenience, could I have avoided it ?

Use the manual network selection on your phone and choose from there. I think last week when I was there, I chose from three - Vodaphone, Optimus and ANother. I know it's a pain, but it doesn't take long.

I did not realise the option was available [ bit of a dinosaur me ] as I tend not to get too deep into phones menu for fear of getting it wrong.
Since your reply I have dug out the user manual and read it properly.
Something I should have done earlier.
