Interest in the area
Interest in the area
We will be in Carvoeiro from this Friday for 9 days and we have a car for the whole time so would like to explore. Any recommendations on where to go and what to see and best of all where to eat, that maybe is not too touristy! Also anyone know of a good app I could download to my iphone so we can get the information/places to visit in the Algarve whilst there. Looking forward to being back in my favourite holiday place. Also to having lots of ideas of where to visit. Thanks Maggs

You can drive virtually anywhere in the Algarve in 1-2 hours, I've actually driven to Seville in Espania quite easily, have a great time, pato

Re: Interest in the area
Eating out in Carvoeiro is always an easy one as there are lots of places to choose from. Try Happys and make sure you call in and book as you generally have dificulty getting a table without doing so. Vimar at the top of restaurant hill is good on a Sunday night because Adelino is usually playing guitar and singing and the food is good too. O Salmao in Monte Carvoeiro is great for fish and fillet steak. If you want a satisfying lunch go into Lagoa and give Marco a call in O Tasquinha down a side street to the left of the P.O. Try his Beirao liqueur 90% Beirao 10% gin great stuff! Then call over to Antonio in the shoe/clothes shop across the road from the P.O and get a bargain in his Spring sale. Tell him Mary sent you
If you want to try chickien piri piri go to Ribeirino across from Zoo Marine or a wee Portuguese place on the way up to Monchique Mountains on the right hand side of the road about 4 km from roundabout at Portimao. Alvor is lovely for a walk along the promenade to the fish restaurants and a wee glass of vino at one of the bars along the way. If you haven't been to Cliff's winery do that.. It is situated just behind Algarve Shopping Centre. Go for lots of walks along the cliffs and climb down onto the beaches. You'll need loads of exercise to burn off the calories
Enjoy your nine days I can guarantee they will fly....
Re: Interest in the area
I was getting worried by the lack of response but really pleased now- thanks to those who took the time to respond. Will take all suggestions with me. Are there any Castles we could visit - seem to think I have heard of a couple but did not write the places down so any help would be gratefully received. I must say these forums are brilliant much better than tourist/hotel recommendations. Thanks again

Re: Interest in the area
I'm not aware of an appropriate App, but there are plenty of worthwhile places to visit, and to eat out side Carvoeiro.
you'll need a map of the area, but :-
Lagoa. There are 2 or 3 good restaurants here. Chrissys and Tasquina. Both at the back of this not terribly touristy town. If you can find the covered market, then you'll find these 2.
Silves. Lovely old moorish cstle sits above what I believe used to be the regional capital in the old days. well worth the exploring. several good places to eat.
There is an excellent restaurant, O'Barrada just off the dual carriageway between Lagoa and Silves
Ferragudo, on the Carvoeiro side of the Arade river by Portimao is well worth a visit, and is a pleasant coastal drive from Carvoeiro. A very pleasant town, lovely old square and several very good restaurants including Fim de Mundo.
Further afield you can visit the seaside resort of Alvor. Nice fishing harbour, a good boardwalk for a stroll, and loads of fish restaurants.
Finally the mountain inland of Carvoeiro is Monchique. Well worth a drive to the very top, nice restaurants on the way up.
Loads of places to eat in Carvoeiro, and everybody will recommend their favourite restaurant. For a good value, excellent food restaurant on restaurant hill in Carvoeiro, try A Gale', or Happys, just across the road.
Taste on the "out road" is worth a visit, likewise Ele e ela.
Wherever you go, this area will not disappoint. Many of us first came here on holiday, and now either live here, or are frequent visitors.........it's that sort of place!

Re: Interest in the area
Hi Maggs
I have no experience of them but there are a few apps on the apple i-store. Just search for "Algarve" and quite a few come up with some free.
The others have given you good advice but also try to get up the West Coast to see the surfing beaches. Take the A22 west and when it ends carry on towards Aljezur - take the turn off to Arrifana and Monte Clerigo which is a must to see. It's over an hours drive but well worth it if you have the time. Enjoy

Re: Interest in the area
Drive to Alte quiet at this time of year and then onto Paderne with its castle ruins , then back via the "OLD " part of Albufeira.

Sagres is well worth a trip and a visit to the most westerly point in Europe and some stunning views. If you have time, stop off at Praia Dona Ana on the outskirts of Lagos or better still, make a separate trip to Lagos.
