There is no particular penalty for formerly UK registered cars. The position applies to any Imported vehicle. A comparison between UK road tax and Portuguese IUC is a bit sterile. The anomoly is that Portuguese cars which were registered prior to the changed method of calculating IUC attract a lower rate than an imported car of the same age.

We have a friend with a diesel Previa and it certainly did not cost him anything like that to matriculate his.
Was their a change of law since 2000 that excused Residents from paying import duty on their first vehicle.
Non resisdents still pay . i think ?

From my understanding of it, you can import one car with no charges - but you need to do it at the time you take up Portuguese residency. You also need to have owned the car in your home country for 6 months previously, and you can't sell it for a further 12 months after getting it on PT plates.

If you're careful what car you picked, you could make a fair old chunk of cash - and give yourself a lovely car to drive around in for a year

Buy that Ferrari brand new for 160,000 euros. Keep it for a year and put 7000 km on it and it'll still be worth 190k+ euros in Portugal, even with a quick sale to a cash buyer. http://auto.sapo.pt/Carros/Ferrari-F430-F1-828946.aspx

If you bought a car that was 6 months old to begin with, you're leaving someone else take the depreciation hit - you could easily clear 100k euros profit on the right car if you garaged it for a year and didn't use it at all.

we just got some note through the post about our 1.4 VW Golf so went to the Financas to see what was what; the car was registered on the 28th December 2010 & they wanted tax for the whole year so we've just paid €160 for four days of driving; utter garbage.

Imposto Único de Circulação has to be paid every year to the Finances
The amount depends on your engine size and type of fuel
15€ is the fine per year plus the amount due,so the amount you paid is about right .
Don't forget to go and pay next years tax before the end of December this year.
It can only be paid during the month of registration.

this is a 1.4 litre VW Golf, the tax for 2010 was €151.69, he then charged us €15 on top fine as you say, so 4 days driving cost us €166 :(

he then offered to let us pay for this year, even though it's not December yet so we did, and the tax is now up to €160.78, but now we don't have to go back till Dec 2013

VW didn't tell us that we needed to tax the car for the 4 days in 2010, we wouldn't have effin' well registered it if we'd known

and sorry to bore on, but €1,500 disappeared from our bank account, so we went to see why; it seems that back in the day when we were paying Jorge de Lagos for the maid service (1986-1987) he wasn't paying the social security on to the Financas, so they retrospectively billed us for it more than 20 years after! no warning, just removed from the bank account. But (at a cost of €250) our lawyer got it overruled

A good lawyer will include an adjustment in the contract between the buyer and seller for rates due or paid in the year of sale or cover this point separately.

logged on earlier tonight (ok morning) and in the webcam there was 2 guys on this side - and probably same on other side- of a car apparently walking beside the car with open doors on the in road around the chemist (near Sullys anyway) . few frames later and GNR patrol car in view, other car now at angle in front of Sol hotel with hood up. GNR car stops in 'usual' stop in front of Sol. GNR guys can be seen over at the other car. few more frames and GNR car has reversed up to bottom of hill, then forward again to right in front of this other car. clearly giving the guys in the car a jump start from their car. few more frames and all gone.

Nice one GNR.
