just back

sam wrote:I was stopped by the police in a road side check - just outside Carvoeiro - earlier this year. They wanted ID and confirmation of car ownership. I had my driving licence - one of the old style, non-photo types and a copy of the rental contract. I thought 'Sh*t' as I did not have my passport. They took them to their car and seemed to be doing some checking, and luckily they were quite happy with the docs. So take a copy of the rental agreement of vehicle registration out with you.
I have an Irish driving licence, not plastic, small fold out type, 3 pages, photo ID, 23 languages on the front
so this should suffice for phodo ID purposes, always leave the hire agreement in the car anyway, not strictly meeting their requirements re passport but going to a beach or even touring around, I would not be happy carrying my passport. anyway if it was beaten up too much the US (+ others) might now allow it for entry purposes.

I saw the riots first hand in Manchester, I was working late when it all went pear shaped - you should have seen these idiots running around on their phones grinning from ear to ear, pushing people off their bikes to steal them and smashing windows.... all for shits and giggles, borne out of a desire to see destruction for fun rather than political motivation. And the image which sticks out in my mind is the one of the lad setting fire to Miss Selfridge whilst the police look on, they caught up with him a few days later though.

According to the BBC and SKy News the prisons are now overcrowded and tensions between prisoners and their new cell mates are running high. GOOD! Prison is meant to be a horrible place and a deterrent. Not only do they use slop buckets but come morning they should be slopped over their heads! If these louts think they are going to a Premier Inn or an Ibis then they better think again! In fact that is exactly what happened to one "yoof". The Police put in a Premier Inn(with instructions not to leave his room) as there were no spare cells. You could not make it up!

I was in the shoe outlet beside Izzi in Oct and when paying for shoes, took out my passport and (jokingly) remarked about ' traffic cops' etc etc and the salesperson said they too had to carry photo id or they would be fined €60. So it's not just non nationals.
news to me that everyone in the car has to have photo id though. Passport expires in Feby so will get new one notarised by blonde lady in post office

Re: just back
Everyone must carry some sort of ID with them by law
Re: just back
I think most of the rest of europe carry I.D cards by law, something the Brit's are against for some reason.

Was that certified in Blighty? Think that is where Mr LIcy got caught out. Is that the supermarket just off the Lagoa mainroad on the right? Or is that the Jumbo one? We got stopped on the roundabout by the garden place before heading off for Intermarche after coming out of the supermarket with a lemon. No more drinking for one person.maccasa wrote:I have colour copies of my passport in the car - with a printed note on the bottom saying - I certify this is an accurate copy of the passport of Mr............ and signed with an unreadable signature, with heavy type "GB passport authority" under it. Worked twice for me when police have stopped for their usual document checks - both times just outside Pau da Azucar.
