Today's useless trivia

Post by e-richard »

If you're shopping at Pingo Doce and do not have a 50c or €1 coin for the trolley, a UK £1 coin works as well.

I can recall using Irish coins(before the Euro was used) on London parking meters and it worked a treat. 10 Irish pence would jam the coin meter for two hours. Lovely jubbly!

At Sainsbury's near us in Fife the customers are obviously more trustworthy because they don't charge a deposit for the trolley. Having said that Homebase on the same retail park do - must be something to do with different types of people - maybe DIY'ers in this area are not to be trusted to return the trolleys.

Our Waitrose ones have an electonic brake that goes on if you pass area sensors. The ones from Morrisons are all in the canal.

Nowadays, a pound or euro in the shopping trolley slot means nothing to most people and a minority will dump or abandon the trolley instead of putting it back.

Now ,if trolleys have slots for £5 coins or €5 euro coins than I am sure there would be a very high return compliance rate! :)

Joey, that means it should work with any trolley ,then! :D As it 'appens, I have an abundance of 2ps and I shall try it when I am in Baile Átha Cliath in December!

Not a wise move to criticize a moderator but on this occasion E-Richard has got it wrong when he wrote that he posted this topic as useless trivia - not so! Some great tips have been picked-up here! 8)

James, if you file the edges off a 50p coin it will work in a 10p slot.
