RESTAURANTS IN cvo ARE VERY VERY GOOD, ESPECIALLY A GALE UP THE HILL, AND O PATIO, THE LANTERN WAS A FAVOURITE OF OURS UNTIL THIS YEAR, FOOD OK IF YOU LIKE THE SMELL OF BLEACH WHILST EATING FROM THE DISH.

Thanks digger, thought if I put a mention on this site it would encourage others to have a look and put their top five restaurants on.
It has been really interesting to see the ones that come up again and again.

must confess, I don’t think I’ve visited 5 restaurants in cvo….I could name a dozen or more and tell you where they are but only ever dined in 3 maybe 4. (I enjoy shopping around for good nosh and cooking it myself). I must say…. last time we were there we went to ‘A Gale’ - which has been mentioned a couple of times - and we weren’t entirely happy with the dourada we were served some slightly inferior fish; don’t know what they call it but most people don’t know the difference anyway and lots of pt restaurants are guilty of this….However it was a good evening….

Yes I agree ref last post...I also agree that most people really don't know that much about good food....(Now I'm for it...who the hell are you to say that etc etc....) It's just that Ive lived here for two years and eat out almost every night and having spent the last 30 years eating (Im Fat) around the world I can tell you that the average restaurant here is really very good with a few bad ones...and when I compare with France...Portugal leaves them Standing ..time and time again....but so many times I read usually stunning reports about restaurants that I know really are 'Average'...but compared to so many UK joints.....yes they are fabulous...So what is my point............actually I havnt got a clue what my point is....I think Ive lost the plot actually......I just think that it is so subjective ...and most people out from UK will be and should be very happy with the service / food / hygene....and big smiles that they will find here...and I should say that most Portuguese places are v. good...but having tried many many places run by non Portuguese...most aint that good.........So my friends...come forth and glutton yourselves..its wonderful here...

Try stone steaks up at monte cvo. Can't be beaten. Went to France last year. The area we visited was all French holiday makers, so you would expect the food to be special. Not so, it was mostly overcooked, stale and pricey! We're back to cvo this year can't wait! I agree with earlier comment that we Brits don't know what good food is. Thank God ! we would n't eat Fish and Chips out of paper if we did.

Having visited many restaurants in CVO over the years we have had our good and bad experiences. Further to recent posts on this forum, I see that Julios does not appear in the lists of favourites (thank goodness) as we also had a one-off first visit there. As others said, we were not made welcome as we were newcomers and naturally we have not been back. I'll send our favourites list later.

Agree entirely...
* Most Restaurants here are very good...one that aint is Julios..(Terrible)...Most Brits are not that 'Ofay' with 'Good Food' and finally French food is on the whole stale..overcooked and overpriced...and their Loos are really Sh...ty....
By the way I went to the Japanese restaurant tonight in Almancil...excellent Sashimi and as much as you want...excellent service and decor...BUT theit tepanyaki is not good...slightly overcooked Beef and Prawn ( The Beef was not selected correctly)..and the price £200 for 5 is a bit pricey (Without Wine)...but it is still very good and I'd recomend it...Tomorrow its Cataplana and what I call the 'Blue Sign' restaurant half way up Restaurant hill on the right is very good for that..forgot the name. Sunday its back to UK....Oh dear...I had a Breakfast there last week in Chichester..the Egg was slopping onto the table ..basically it was 'Take it or leave it Mate'...AAhh ..nice to be home..

Oh thank goodness. I'm new to checking this forum and thought we were the only people who had bad experiences at that so-called restaurant Julios. What a sad experience we had as your earlier members have posted. It was awful! And like our other friends, we were shoved in a corner and almost made to grovel for the menu to start with!!! When you get the "basic" A Galeria and other nice establishments in the town, who needs Julios? Not us and it would seem many other forum people as well.
Anyway, thankfully we all have a choice and for us it won't be Julios. Just out of interest, does that restaurant take note of the comments expressed on this forum - if not, they should -there is plenty of room for improvement. Back to the town soon we are pleased to report. See you soon MC

It was just as you wrote for us as well. Thank goodness for some nice people in good (and cheaper) local restaurants.

Poor old Julios..but have to agree.went once and that was enough!
Theres someone here(and on another topic..cant recal which) whos been having a go at cuisine a la Francaise....
all I can say is that I (we) have only ever experienced the best of food in drink in France..and we've been all over..
even the road side pull- ins offer very good quality & choice....
even the simple 'croque-monsieur' is so good....
can I get one in Carvoeiro anywhere I wonder..I do like this for light lunch..
I know tosta-mixta is similar....but the Croque tops this in my opinion..the cheese makes all the difference..yum

and quite like
A Galeria
Casa do pao
O'Casarao in Lagoa
am going to try Lagoa's 'Taberna 31' (newish) on Sept. visit..
has anyone one been there yet?
would like to know what its like!

I must counter your findings Ellie about French cuisine...we have also travelled all over France for many a year and listened to all the hype about French food.Sorry in my (Humble opinion) it is usually awful....Fillet Steak should be tender and not like old leather...and should not be burnt on the outside and bleeding on the inside ..as for seafood...they dont know what fresh seafood is all about...no I must say...and Ive eaten in dozens of Parisian restaurants and NEVer in the last 10 years had one meal that was even passable...but to be fair Im very fussy ......but I have eaten all over the World and really enjoy good food and I must say that I get much better food in UK than in France..time and time again.....Viva La England !!

… ellie…I agree…
…there are some good restaurants in cvo, and throughout Portugal….there are some extraordinary dishes to be found in some seriously traditional eateries ….but really what is the main attraction??…the price….meal for two inc wine with waiter-service on a clean paper tablecloth followed by coffee and brandy….for the price of some grotty pub lunch back in the shires……….
But the food…..(unless you’re in some specialist restaurant where they stew up a big pot of pigs feet with pancreas or whatever)……is remarkably simple and…… ..…..no way can any punter compare it to “cuisine a la Francaise”

…guest…. (raving Anglophile)…. of course you’ve just been unlucky (“eaten in dozens of Parisian restaurants and never in the last 10 years had one meal that was even passable”) ……the unluckiest…...but keep at it…..
