Pheonix Nights

Post by Ernie »

I believe that Pheonix Nights closed its doors for business for the last time on Friday night. If this is correct its a shame to see another closure in the village a sign of the times . Is Burst the juice bar near Elle & Ella opening this year or is it going to remain closed.

It is shame - I was wonderng what the sound of karaoke would be like whilst I stay at Monte Carvoeiro - stereo of out-of tune cat wailing from Phoenix and the Cocktail Garden will no longer be heard

Perhaps, on reflection, that is one blessing 8)

Hopefully the Phoenix will open again - it's a nice building ad should do well and to be honest I thought it was very popular, so a bit surprised it's closed - unless it's for non-financial reasons - does anyone know?

Understand the people who inherited the property do not want to rent it our now but run it themselves :o : Over the years it has been a sales office for Monte Carvoeiro property sales, a creche, and about 8 different restaurants and bars, including Indian, Chinese, German.
Phoenix bar as it was has been the longest surviving use of the property in the last 15 years.

Many expect to see Tim opening a new venue in the next few days/ weeks. Will keep you informed

Just seen Tim he is taking over the Sports Bar (ex Slam Bar) at Monte Carvoeiro, think it is to be called "Up the pub" likely to be open very soon.

Problem with the Slam Bar, or whatever its to be called, is the location - not much passing trade and dead during the day. It needs to offer something different to make people go there specifically. But with the Cocktail Bar also in the square and the Jazz club open, beer, cocktails and music are in abundence for the number of people who stay at MCVO. Not really any room for a proper dartboard inside and not enough room to hold a quiz night which would appeal to a large number of Brits. Perhaps it should change to appeal to other nationalities who frequent MCVO or the areas around - not sure it could become a locals bar - too expensive because of overheads I would think.

Would a bar more attuned to Germans or Scandanavians work? - any ideas?

It is an fact that there are many fewer brits and Irish in the Algarve this year not just in Carvoeiro.

Albufeira which is a very " Brit " resort is quiet compared to more multinational resorts like Lagos.
In its own small way Carvoeiro reflects this.
At the weekend Smilers ( very popular with Brits ) was almost empty and seems to be closing early some nights while other bars had customers.
A bar focused on scandanavians is not such a bad idea as they are the growing market in the Algarve.

They are dull though aren't they, I mean I've only heard of one comedian, that Victor Borge fella and he was rubbish. They just ain't got a sense of humour.

Why has he left Phoenix Nights?
I used to pop in most days for a drink in the afternoon, as we stay up at Monte CVO. We didn't use it much on an evening though.

Seems a bit strange to leave and just go a few yards to another unit - i could understand it if he wanted to try out a new bar in the village.

As others have said that Slam Bar location is pants during the day - mind you that circle of restaurants and cocktail garden aren't what they used to be when we first started visiting CVO 10 years ago - seems a bit dead in there the last few years - our visits on an evening have decreased as the last few years have gone by.
