Portimao
…we had a little apartment in the centre of Portimao but sold it about 15 years ago…..we’ve not been there much in recent years and of course its all changed.. but you will find a little corner by the old bridge in the old quarter where the fishermen used to keep their things where there’s a gigantic bbq with a very industrial-looking chimney which is shared by 4 or 5 restaurants …….check it out….

well all i can say is that the retuarants there are far better value than certain places that begin with a letter C
best chinese is opp the harbour just after the old iron bridge (near the british consulate)
for italian go to the area near the railway statiion...look for the infamous 123 club and its oposite that.

You should try the Simsa restaurant in Portimao. It's very small so you'll need to book but the food is excellant and superbly presented. The menu is pretty limited to a choice from a blackboard and could be best described as Asian fusion (e.g. Peanut soup!). Good place for a special occasion. To find it you'll need to turn left after the bridge, then right at the BNI Bank and then 2nd left. (The current diversion takes you this way).
Afterwards a stroll along the harbour back to the bridge and past the Slave Auction House is a pleasant way to walk off the food.
Alternatively there are all the Sardine Restaurants under the bridge

For good Portuguese food try DONA BARCA (under the bridge where Digger described), or cary on down the road continuing from the old bridge (Rua Infante Henrique) where the road widens on the left find O BICHO and another called PALHEIROS or similar.
CARVI in the steet being dug up (Rua Direita) just close to the bottom end of the shopping street (Rua Comercio) is OK and just past there OS UNIDOS is unique, especially lunchtime! Further down Rua Direita on the left try TERESINHA.
